Draw your own conclusions. I will post this tidbit from the article though.

And although a larger share of Americans are uninsured or under insured compared to populations in England or other European countries, even groups with good access to health insurance experienced worse health than people in England.

I'm curious if they controlled for how long someone has had health insurance coverage.

Whats funny about our "system" is that you can buy private insurance but as soon as you are sick you will be locked into that insurance for the rest of your life. No one will take you. I find it amazing that this is ok to the republicans.

You're going to make COW angry with this story.

How big of a difference is this? Is significant? It doesn't really say in the article.

The researchers say: "Why health status differs so dramatically in these two countries, which share much in terms of history and culture, is an unresolved puzzle." I'm guessing that's the thing they're not controlling for. The suspect the US is still more diverse and has more third-world immigrants than the UK does. That would bring the average US health outcomes down.

They can't possibly think that it's maybe the American lifestyle that just possibly is causing us to be worse than them???

When kids are sucking down soda, each sh1t processed food, not exercising in just about any manner (except to throw tantrums), and you then continue that on for 60 years or so, with the stress of work thrown on, exactly what do people expect??

ugh, everyone in the developed world is healthier than Americans. Simply put, Americans of all ages, from children to teens to adults, are hooked on McDonald, Burger Kings, and a boat load of unhealthy shit. Every take a stroll through the conservative states? Just look at all those fat Hillbilly Bob's.

The last 5 years of life of an American cost the health care system as much as the previous 20 years to keep him alive. (By comparison, a Japanese in his last 5 years of life costs about 20% of that).

It profits pharmco's greatly to keep a dying American alive! i.e., don't let him die, keep him hooked up in the hospital. Take away this last 5 years, then suddenly the US life expectancy plummets to almost 3rd world status. Healthy life expectancy my ass.

c'mon now, don't blame the immigrants for the fatty lards that occupy the asses of two-third of your family members and friends (statistically speaking 2/3 Americans are clinically obese).

Did you read the article idiot?

But despite looking, the researchers did not find any real evidence that differences in obesity, alcohol consumption or physical activity were to blame.

Is it just me or does this trend seem to have bottomed out, if not perhaps on the reverse? Aren't schools limiting soda machines, chips, etc now days? There are more eat healthy live healthy public ads, programs, etc than ever before.

Just seems to me that this trend is starting to reverse. I imagine you would need to compare a segment of 5-18 years say 20 years ago with that same segment 10 years ago and another segment of the same age with most recent to determine.

It just seems like there is more hope now days for this problem to recede somewhat.

Guess you haven't heard the balking by Sarah Palin and her ilk at Michelle Obama's campaign to get kids to eat healthier.

Having read the article it seems that health care per se has little to do with this which isn't really a surprise. Collectively we live a suicidal life style. Combine that and the inner city crime statistics and I believe you'll find that's the reason for most of the differences.

just because they claim to have 'looked' doesn't mean they did it right. studies are so full of bad statistics that the only way to determine if the study is worth more than the paper it's written on is to personally know an actual statistician.

How the hell is that possible? The English survive on a diet of fish, chips and beer!

Very good comparison as the demographic make-up of the US is similar to the UK. What a very valid study.

Or perhaps sick people in England die earlier vs an American so they are excluded from the health profile.

Weird how they beat us at every age group! Must be all the dead people the US keeps alive bringing us down. If only the US insurance companies dropped coverage for those types we'd be on par with England.

The researchers looked at but found no evidence that obesity, alcohol consumption or physical activity were to blame for poorer health - but I'm sure they are really, really good researchers nonetheless. Not, say, just devoted to establishing government health care, 'cause we all know that obesity and lack of exercise have no effect on health, right?

Not to worry, we'll all be right as rain just as soon as we can no longer afford private automobiles, have to ride buses, and must therefore walk a few blocks every day. And of course have the government control our health care. And maybe our diet . . .

There goes the excuse that at least those with insurance in US get the best care in the world.

Here if Australia, if you are sick, you can go to a doctor or hospital without any fear that you are going have $1000s in bills, as everything is paid for by the government from tax revenue ("single payer"). It's the same in the UK. Whereas in America, a "simple" trip to a hospital could result in massive financial liabilities and even bankruptcy. So I wonder if Americans are much more afraid or reluctant to seek medical help, meaning they receive essential care too late.

If only life were so simple and everyone stupid like Aussies.

Of course, it could simply be that the USA has it wrong on health care. Every other first world country has a nationalized health care system, where medical care is provided free to citizens. I feel sorry for ordinary, middle class Americans.

Yes, because our demographic is the same as yours, and your failing version of "health care" will work here.

Such an easy solution how could we be so stoopid?

It's ok for anyone who can do math. Would you insure someone who you knew had cancer? Would you sell car insurance to someone who had already totaled the car they are trying to insure?

The difference between UK and US (and most of Europe) is well known despite what article implies. US minorities lead all others in obesity, diabetes and other disease measures. The life expectancy for black males only just reached 70 (it was 66 and 67 years for awhile). Its always silly to compare US to UK or Sweden etc because the populations are very different.
