Funny how the democrats (Charles Rangel, D-NY) introduce a draft bill and then use the threat of a draft to scare people away from voting for Bush. Crap like this is why I'm voting third party.

I'm not sure there will be a draft but it's definitely a possibility. Bush has misled the country numerous times. His promsie to keep the army professional is laughable. Also, if you keep up warmongering, you need to get troops from somewhere...

RBH'rs claim the intellectual highground, sniff endlessly about the insufferable ignorance of Bush supporters, and then post responses like this.

It kind of throws cold water on that claim.

When Bush says he will not have a draft, is that like when he said the military should not be used for nation building?

Does anyone buy his campaign promises, he broke almost all of his from 2000.

Bush specifically said, "We will not have an all-volunteer army."

It doesn't get any clearer than that.

That's interesting, thanks. Could you elaborate? (I don't know any military folks very well so I can't ask them)

And I assume you followed the vote? Then you know it was an election year gimmick? They took a democrats draft bill that was dead in committee and voted it down on the floor to put on a show for the media. You know this has nothing to do with reality post election? They can make five more draft bills if they want. You know there is a cute cartoon about how a bill becomes a law...

By the democrats. And the republics called them on their bluff and it was overwhelmingly rejected by both parties. Even the bill originator voted against it. Old news.

Well, here's the deal.

If you are in a firefight, who do you want watching your back: Someone who is forced to be there, and really doesn't want to be there, and maybe even doesn't believe in the military at all, or someone who volunteered and is motivated?

I know many people in the military who say that if a draft is initiated, that night they put in for their resignation/retirement.

Are you suggesting that we defend the insufferable ignorance of Bush supporters?

This is not off topic in this thread...

Lets say that Kerry is elected. He has said in 2 of three debates and at many stops that he will

Third Debate Transcript
Now, I've proposed adding two active-duty divisions to the armed forces of the United States -- one combat, one support.

In addition, I'm going to double the number of Special Forces so that we can fight a more effective war on terror, with less pressure on the National Guard and Reserve. And what I would like to do is see the National Guard and Reserve be deployed differently here in our own country. There's much we can do with them with respect to homeland security. We ought to be doing that. And that would relieve an enormous amount of pressure.

I don't see how this could be done without a draft to assist with the "currently stretched thin" military. I don't think that there will be a draft with either presidents. 1. I don't think it's needed and 2. I think that Kerry doesn't fully understands what he said above.

In regards to the "back door draft"... I was in the military under Clinton and there was a stop-loss program in place and we weren't even fighting anyone like we are in Iraq. So I guess Clinton was "back door drafting" outside of a declared war.

Do you lack any sort of logical thought?

POLITICIANS NEED to get elected.
A vote for the draft is political death.
A draft cannot be instantiated without an act of congress.
Understand?

Something to do with all the laid-off IT workers anyway...

BTW - What's the deal with signing up v. being drafted? I seem to remember from shows about that period that there were benefits to signing up before you were drafted...

that means they were not only thinking of a mandatory draft but getting ready for it too.

That is the worst lie I've seen. The pentagon has nothing to do with the draft boards. Selective Services is a completely seperate branch of the government. And they have actively been trying to fill positions on the draft board for about a decade. Look at factcheck for more on that.

Congrats on figuring it out. Kerry is the candidate most likely to implement a draft (note I'm not saying he will)- at least if he plans on following through with his larger military campaign promise.
