I need a antivirus that can be centrally controlled and run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. I have been looking at Sophos and CA Etrust. Anyone have any experience with these or know of something better?

I know McAfee has an av for win, mac, and linux but like most AV vendors the functionality for the non windows system is no where near as robust as the windows clients

We have Mcafee now and it sucks. Does not detect much and having trouble with updating.

There's a fix for that (same problem here). You'll have to uninstall and run a clean-up tool and then install the new setup file. Let me see what I can find when I get back to work.

I just implemented ESET NOD32 where I work on all our servers, and rolling out on to the machines.. We had Symantec and it just wasn't cutting it anymore.. I can centrally manage everything with Remote Administrator, and NOD 32 Server.. You can pull down all the groups, and users from Active Directory into Remote Administrator if you place it on a Global Catalog server.. I opted out of this, and put it on a different server, and setup all my groups manually.. I run it on the following platforms

Windows 2008 Server 64 bit
Windows 2003 Server
Vista
Xp
2000

It has the capabilities to run on Linux, however I do not believe they offer an Apple solution you may ask someone.. Great thing is that it has such a small foot print, and I can control all my anti virus updates centrally, and locally or distribute as many update servers as I want for remote sites or here centrally.. If you currently have Mcafee or Symantec you can buy ESETs RipandRemove to get it off all the machines via script.. Since we all know removing Mcafee or Symantec is about like trying to get a virus off itself..

Giving a bump to this thread.. We've used CA for 6+ years.. Currently using Etrust ITM 8.1 on about 1,000 nodes (Windows 2003, Windows XP, and Exchange 2003). Our maintenance is up and instead of renewing I'm looking to switch.. We've had A LOT of issues over the years with them and I'm not looking to give them more of our money! So to the op.. Fair warning.. STAY AWAY FROM CA!

That being said.. Evaluating other solutions is daunting. There are just so many out there now. Kaspersky, Sophos, NOD32, AVG, Avira, just to name a few.. I want one that is:

* Centrally managed / easily manageable
* Remote install
* AV AND AntiSpyware / malware

Any recommendations on where to start? I've downloaded (but haven't installed yet) Kaspersky and Sophos.

I can tell you this much, I've used sophos and I don't think it's that good. it doesn't rate among the best either. i've seen several issues where it finds something and then you can't take any action on it, or it doesn't find what it's supposed to at all!

I agree. We have CA Etrust (not my choice) and while central administration is very easy, I'm not impressed with the support department or with the virus detection rates of the software. I'll be switching to something else as soon as the contract expires so I have an excuse to "force" the owner to pay for a different program.

Wow, really? I'm reading the opposite. I've read a couple sites that put it close to the top. How long did you use it?

What did you go to since you didn't like it?

Thanks

maybe i'm using an older version, but i just don't like the antivirus client. i havent actually used the console though.
but I and several people I know have had several problems with sophos not detecting viruses, and failing to update itself as well as fresh installs not working.
Right now i'm using symantec corp 10 which is not bad but I'm trying to switch to 11 which is another story.. i'll get there eventually!

I'd just like to add a HUGE  for McAfee Total Protection Suite. When I say it is absolutely worthless I mean it is so useless a system is better with nothing than MTPS. I've been in this job for about a year and a half and not only does it not adequately protect the systems it slows systems down considerably. It should tell you something when not a single tech in the dept is running the 'corporate standard'.

My University uses Sophos, and as an end user ( the university has license for students to use Sophos AV for their personal computers) I find it much better compared to my friends ( who are not aware of this licensing scheme) who use Norton 2008 or McAfee. I worked in the IT dept. last year and from what I gather, central admin is a breeze, not to mention hourly updates and reasonably good detection rates.

Ok, so i finally got the Symantec Endpoint 11 manager and clients working on some test machines. it took a while, there were several problems I encountered but they are definitely improving it.
you can get a lot of reports and manage a lot of it centrally from the server and it looks good performance wise. It only uses 4MB ram in the background (!) and about 60MB while it is running a scan, which seems a little on the higher side but not too bad really. The Active scan (memory, common areas) only takes one minute on my machine, which is about 3 years old.

Also, the performance hit is minimal on my system. I don't even notice it really even when scanning in the background. It feels similar to version 10 in that way.

Now to start installing it for everyone!!

How much disk space are you seeing used on the management server? A client handed me the software and wanted it installed. AFTER I got it functioning, I did some more reading and found reports of it eventually using 10 GB or even (one person) 20 GB of disk space on the server, due to the way it stored virus definitions.

I couldn't take the risk of it using that much space, so I volunteered to uninstall-it from their server and all their desktops and re-install it on another hard drive that had more free space.
