After graduating from Loyola University Chicago, Kasinecz struggled to support herself in the midst of the recession, working a series of unsatisfying jobs—selling ads at the soon-to-be bankrupt Sun-Times, bagging groceries at Whole Foods

Bagging Groceries after getting a degree from Loyola University?

Thats a good school, High ranking MBA program.

Epic Fail if you graduate from Loyola University and your bagging groceries right next to the highschool dropout.

Even 20 years later, the people who graduated into the recession of the early '80s were making substantially less money than people lucky enough to have graduated a few years afterward, when the economy was booming.

wow. Guess I was lucky to barely avoid the .com crash AND the housing crash

In 1968, for instance, a vast majority of 20-somethings were living independent lives; more than half were married. But over the past 30 years, the onset of sustainable economic independence has been steadily receding.

Can't really argue with that.

Internet smartasses making fun of people in order to make themselves feel better.

Mind your own business and live your life? No. That's asking way too much.

For the lot of people, the degree doesn't make the money - good timing and opportunity makes the money.

Strong networking skills, above all else, is where it's at. I fail at networking. I can hardly bullshit with people I don't care about, about bullshit I don't care about, to save my own skin.
I did choose a degree that will be incredibly difficult to turn into a topical career, but many people have degrees in unrelated fields, or don't even have degrees in the first place.

What did they do? They were essentially at the right place at the right time to land a good opportunity, and then they busted their ass to prove they deserve it. They also may have just happened to know the right people, through family or friends, who provided them a foot in the door.

In this world, it's always been far more about who you know, not what you know. From there, you just have to be willing to learn as needed, and/or otherwise apply yourself.

Well, she made it our business and...
"Everyone tells me to just pick something," she says, "but I don't know what to pick."
Needs a Mike Rowe moment. Get a fucking job.

Eff, my 13 year old kid earned $100 this week, $20/day, dragging limbs from the Feb ice storm. $100, self esteem, work ethic, pride in a job well done, what ever else...

Looks like I could send my kid to her house.

a lot of this. I got every job/promotion I had because of some combination of these factors. skills alone will only get you so far.

Communications isnt that great a degree.

EVERYONE needs communication skills, but they get paychecks by doing something that actually creates a product or service of value.
A communications grad doesnt have many trade-able skills to offer.

Her degree is in communication and interests are "Work life balance". Degree in communications qualifies you for the same jobs as a highschool degree and "work life balance" is a euphemism for "I'll be halfway to my car at at 4:59pm"

Loyola University of Chicago
BA, Communications, Advertising & Public Relations

she's on linkedin, not a bad profile actually.

It does not add up, with that degree from Loyola she should have been able to land some jobs above "high school dropout" level.

There has to be more to the story behind the scenes, ie: real poor work habits and/or interpersonal skills etc..

Things a University will not teach.
