Lol, how did I know that was coming

I have not even played Episode 1 yet, but I definitely thought the point of episodic gaming was to have shorter games, but more frequent releases...seems like they got something messed up.

This is quite stupid indeed, and I'm growing less and less interested in getting Episode 2 as time passes.

I'm also waiting for SiN: Episode 2 which was promised in 6 months as well. While I was a supporter of the episodic concept, I'm absolutely not if its going to take this long between episodes. Just finish the whole game and let me play it in one sitting in that case.

Its not that even Episode 2 is delayed, but now TF2 and Portal is delayed too.
the whole "episodic gaming" idea is trashed already (nice idea, horrible implementation)
this is doing nothing but giving Valve a black(er) eye.

Horrible horrible.

I think there was supposed to be a year difference between each episode. But Valve is still off by a lot.

Last time I heard, the company that does SiN was bought out and they aren't releasing any more episodes.

HL2 Ep 3 was supposed to be released by Christmas 07, so it looks like they will be 1 episode behind schedule come Christmas.
I'm going to say 09 before HL2 Ep 3 might be released.

It looks like the problem is more that they're trying to do too much at once. Episode 2 is going to be bundled with Team Fortress 2 AND Portal. If something goes wrong with any of these, they are all delayed. Add to that the fact that they are shooting for a release not just for PC but also PS3 and XBOX 360, and it's surprising that it will even come out this year.

They should work on and release TF2 asap. Sell that separately, and then sell ep2 w/ portals when it's done. When ep2 comes out maybe have 2 bundles, one w/ ep2 and portals, and another with all 3 games that makes TF2 a bit cheaper if you didn't buy it separately.

Yeah that was a bad idea to do the 3 episode thing. Though they have been making improvements to the Source engine, albeit some are pretty minor like the DoD color correction and whatnot, if they aren't going to be finished with Ep3 till late 2008 or worse, they're going to be spending quite a bit of time on an old engine while other games coming out like UT 2007, Crysis, etc, are going to seem way more advanced unless they can really really improve the Source engine. I like most of what Valve has done, and their Source engine is excellent overall, but that's just way too long for a possibly short episode.

I'd rather them release Ep2 + TF2 as the multiplayer and perhaps delay Portal and release it separately. So all of these years they are working on a few episodes (that in total might be only 1/3 longer than the average full game) while everyone else is cranking out DX10/next gen engine-based games. Granted they probably have some of the team on their new game(s) (HL3?), but it just seems that the episodes are going too slow and don't offer enough compared to a brand new game. I would've certainly bought Ep1 if it was (a) longer, or more importantly (b) had a multiplayer component. At least had some addons. I don't recall any update to HL2DM for a long time since they added like one new map and those stupid weapons like the stun gun. I haven't played DoD:S in a while but that could've used some of the original DoD maps redone for Source (caen anyone?).

I think the main problem is it's bundled with TF2. Which means it's never going to be released.

Actually the original date for Ep. 2 (announced shortly after Ep.1 was released) was November 2006 AFAIK.

So much time has passed since I last played Ep.1 that I don't really care about Ep.2 anymore. And I'll have grandchildren by the time Ep. 3 is released. Maybe I could play it with them?

Episode 1 was delayed and weak if I'm being honest. That Episode 2 has been delayed again is totally unsurprising and starting to grate.

Excuses as always:

1. Multicore - great that they're supporting it, suckage that it'll get trotted out as being such a blocker to their progress, like they hadn't had any heads up on it like everyone else in the world
2. Console versions (cf #1 again) - the PC gamers gets fvcked over while they mess about converting the old stuff for people who don't care about the HL universe with sh1tty joypads, gee thanks
3. Graphical advances - they're nice but by the time we get to enjoy it, they're treading water with the rest of the games out there

There are advantages to the Steam/Source model but Valve are seriously taking the p1ss now. Episodic gaming is supposed to be faster - all we're getting at the moment is half of the content they predicted yet it takes twice as long to make. This time we get Portal and TF2 as well, but I'm more interested in the HL universe. Portal is linked into that but TF2 is irrelevant, I never played the original and I'd rather they got Episode 2 finished before anything else. Artificially bundling the 3 games together is even worse. At least release Portal, it's touted as an opportunity for them to test stuff for future releases anyway, and it's only meant to last a few hours so how can that not be finished by now? Plus we have to pay full game prices as Portal and TF2 are included, whether they're wanted or not. Giving people a choice FTW?

Ritual provided a masterclass in fvcking up the episodic model - promise the earth including 9 episodes and XBLA releases, then put out a poorly executed, buggy FPS that has limited retro appeal. Oops, only shifted around 150,000 copies. Then do and say nothing for six months while your fanbase says WTF, until you run away to different companies (god knows why'd they want you, the QA lead especially) and the remainder of the team gets bought out to make sh1tty web games.

Valve are nowhere near as incompetent as Ritual but they are seriously milking the cash cow and abusing the cachet that the HL name holds.

Dang I know EP 2 will be longer but...
I guess it took them like 6 years for HL2 so...

And they should be cheaper... I'm not dropping a Hamilton on 4-5 hours of gameplay. I could get 10-12 in Prey for that. I played Episode 1 at a friends house, and I enjoyed it as much as HL2, and the engine upgrades were nice (finally, some world shadows), but it was not enough time for $20.00.

they seriously have to *fix* that sssSource Engine

it is *ancient* compared with Gamebryo or Doom3 or Unreal 3 ... it seriously is behind .. unless you like Engines for old rigs

i don't think they are waiting on *content* ... i [really] think they are *trying* to fix the Engine

And Ep1 went on sale for $9.95 right away at CC ... i bought it but couldn't be bothered to finish it .... b o r i n g
hopefully Ep2 wont be "Gravity Gun, Puzzles Part II
