Epox 8k7a kills AMD cpu's?

I've read newsgroups about issues with an Enermax PS and Epox 8k7a mobo's, but I haven't read anything like this...

System:

Epox 8k7a Mobo ver 1.1
AMD 1.1GHz 200Mhz FSB Athlon - OEM
CPU Cooling Fan
256MB Crucial DDR memory
GeForce2 GTS AGP Video Card
Enermax EG365P-VE(FC) PS
Floppy and IDE Hard Drive

Shortly after the initial POST screen displays the CPU speed, the screen goes blank, and an aroma of "burnt" electronics fills the air. Upon inspection, nothing *looks* or smells burnt. However, diagnostics testing [installing 1 component at a time in another system] reveals the CPU is the problem [same occurance on other system - doesn't make it to the POST screen and blank display].

Is this a known issue that I might have overlooked or should I just chock it up to a random act of a CPU suicide?

Never heard of such a thing. Probably just got a processor yeild chip. Hmmm..... gotta check that out.

i've put together many 8k7a mobo's with athlons and never seen such a problem.

Sounds like you cooked your CPU. Did you have the HSF on correctly and did you use thermal compound?

Yep - HSF on correctly and thermal compound. However, I've concluded something must've gone amuck as another cpu and the same HSF [with thermal compound] works.

So - the CPU probably committed suicide. Oh well - time to upgrade my own system anyway.
