EPoX 8RDA FSB and Mem Frequency

Hello,

I just bought a 8RDA and some PC3000 Kingston HyperX 512MB memory. When I try to increase the FSB over 166, the system will not boot. I get prolonged beeping and it won't even goto bios, I have to pull the battery to reset. I can increase the FSB by 1 yes 1 mhz to 167 and it will boot no problem. Anything over that and it screams at me. I tried increasing the memory voltage by one notch but that didn't work either. I have tried setting the memory frequency well below the FSB freqency and it still has issues with it. I though that the 8RDA was spec'd to 200 mhz FSB and the Hyper X PC300 to 187mhz? Can anyone suggest a methodology to try to increase my FSB and memory frequency? I tried the initial setup with only graphics card, cpu, floppy disk, and HD installed. Any suggestions welcome.

System Config:
EPox 8RDA
512MB PC3000 Kingston HyperX
1700+ AMD Thoroughbred B w/Cooler Master HAC-V81
ATI 9500 PRO Radeon
Enermax case w/Powerup 350w

Regards,
Michael (Sorry for the cross post but this forum sees more action)

Is it stable at 166mhz? The 8RDA should handle 200mhz just fine. I'm guessing it's the RAM. What do you have your memory timings set to? You lowered the CPU multiplier, right?

update to teh newest bios (which supports better spd ram timing detection) or...

set it to 166fsb, and then manually set ram timings... this is what i needed to do to get my hyperx pc3000 to boot at higher than 175 (needed this + the newest bios, personally).

I have my timings maxed, and am currently running at 195fsb on a tbred 1800+.

Mike,

Thanks for the sugestion, I've downloaded the latest bios and lo and behold it states that it fixes a problem with overclocking memory. I wouldn't consider boosting the memory frequency above 166 mhz overclocking since it's specked for DDR333 or 187mhz mem freq but who knows. What does spd ram timing detection refer too? I'll have to wait to flash my bios later today.

Thanks,
Mike

Also, make sure to set the System Performance to Expert, CPU Interface to Aggressive, and Memory Timings to Expert. And of course you want memory frequency at Sync (100%) so it's running in sync with the CPU. Pages 4-7 and 4-8 show those if that's a help.

Well, I'm still in the same boat. I flashed the bios to 1/29/03 yet I still have the post error C1h...a memory error if I read it right. I underclock the cpu, and i set all the option to expert. I then set the ram timings conservativly to 7 3 3 3 and bumped the fsb up 1 mhz at a time. I was able to get to 168 mhz fsb&mem! I've tried the mem frequency in sync and underlocked to 111mhz etc. I've tried 5 2 2 2 mem timings as well as bumping the mem voltage up one notch...Anytime I adjust the mem frequency it won't post. The bios update supposedly addressed this problem but I keep getting the C1h post error. Any further suggestions?

Also, it's rock solid at 166mhz FSB & Mem set to auto or 100% with ram timings of 5 2 2 2 and cpu interface at aggressive.

Regards,
Mike

Do you have the AGP bus locked at 66MHz? The manual shows where on page 4-9. If it were me, I would be looking around for a major-name power supply (Enermax, Antec, Sparkle Power) also.

Lastly, make sure your JCLK jumper is on the pins, so it's in the 133/166 range and not the 100/133 range. Good luck!
