I've got a bit of an odd problem with my computer

Yesterday I got my new Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB, and swapped it into the computer. Fired up first time, detected it. Put the the CPU speed back to default (XP1700+) and reinstalled Windows (it was due for it's 6 month reinstall ) and that all went through perfectly fine. Played a few games for a couple of hours, then realised I hadn't put the CPU/memory speeds back up, so reset to change those.

I then set the memory/FSB speeds back to what they were previously, and hit "F10" to save and exit, and the computer reset. That was where the problems started. I'm sure I forgot to put the multiplier down. So, no worries I thought, and hit Reset, and pressed/held "Insert" as it powered back on (the almost universal "Start up with BIOS defaults" key), but nothing. Power came on, fans spun up, but no display, no POST. Only "26" displayed on the LED display on the motherboard.

Reset the CMOS with the jumper, leaving it for ~10 mins. Same as before. Only fans came on, no POST. Unplugged all but gfx card, 1 stick of memory (the Samsung, as it's the oldest, and it had always worked, but i tried with just the GeIL as well), and CPU. Still the same. Took the battery out, and left it for 7 hours overnight, replaced the battery. Same.

Took the 9800 out, put in a PCI card. Booted first time. Great, I thought, the brand new Radeon is dead. Set up the BIOS to defaults and saved/exited, and let it start again. Turned it off, put Radeon back. Same as all last night. Put my old GF4 Ti4200 back in, and it fired up straight away. Great, I thought, Radeon is dead. At least it's not the AGP slot on my motherboard.

Went to my other PC (Asus P4PE, P4 2.4) and put the Radeon in. Fired up first time. My face looked something like this --> <-- for a while. OK, so the Radeon isn't dead...

I looked up the error code 26 on the web (typical that I couldn't find the manual the one time I need it! ) and found this page which says
26 - This is an "overclocking" error. You can almost always fix this by clearing the cmos.
But I had cleared the CMOS...the battery was disconnected for ~7 hours, surely that would be long enough...!

Anyone got any ideas, as this has totally stumped me

Oh yeah, PC specs:
Epox 8RDA+ motherboard
Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred
1x 512MB Samsung PC2700/1x 512MB GeIL PC3200
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
550W Q-Tec PSU (i know, "Get a good quality power supply", but it worked with the Radeon when I first put it in, it wasn't until later it started not working. Plus, I have a 350W almost generic PSU in the P4 system I've got, and that worked fine with the Radeon during my testing, so it's more than likely not the power supply)

Many thanks in advance.

Using a card that works, go into BIOS and disable Sidebanding and make sure AGP is set to 66mhz or 1:2. Save/Exit and try the 9800.

This is probably rather too obvious but:

put in old vga card - go to bios - enter "setup defaults" - shut down - put new card in and see if it starts.

Also upgrade bios if you haven't already and one more thought - voltage on new card.
If mobo is older might be outside the range of the new card? AGP pro slot voltages? Oh man its past midnight here and head is spinning sorry I can't get more focussed.

thats what i thought too.
ive oc'ed with an 8RDA and forgot to lock the AGP at 66, kept it at auto.
nothing like that happened, though.

Thanks for the tips guys

I double-checked that the AGP speed was set to 66, and I disabled FastWrites (couldn't see Sidebanding) and set the primary display to AGP/Onboard, and put the Radeon in, and it worked

Thanks!

I've posted several time about the problem I've been having. I have a 9600 Pro. My computer worked fine ever since I built it in July. Installing a new router, sit down, blank screens. Reboot. Blank screens. Reboot several more times, no video, nothing. Post code starts at FF, then moves to C0 or C1.

Manual says something about the memory. Reseated it, tried different DIMM slots, same thing. I can't even get into the bios to change anything as I cannot see anything on my monitors.

Any advice?

Oh, and everything boots up fine. HDDs, opticals, CPU fan...EXCEPT the fan on my 9600 Pro. That doesn't do anything.

Radeons are very sensitive to AGP bus speeds over 66mhz. They might work at a higher speed, but they may not as well.

Thanks sandorski - Do any Nvidia cards have similar issues? (I'm about to install an EPoX 8RDA3+ with Barton 2500 and an Nvidia GeforceFX 5200)

GeForces are much more tolerant of higher speed AGP busses, so depending on how high the AGP bus is it will have a greater chance of working. Just for the sake of cutting down on hassles, lock the AGP to 66mhz to start with, then up it after you have your system up and running again. This could also be a Chipset issue, though I'm not aware of any, so by going easy you will be doing yourself a favour.
