Epox 8rda+ setup difficulties

So...finally got my parts: 8rda+, 1700+ Tbred, slk-800, 512 corsair xms3200, leadtek GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB 8x, WD 80GB HDD, 10 GB IBM HDD, Hitachi DVD drive, floppy drive.

And naturally, I left my Windows XP disk at home in Houston, so I'm w/o an OPsys...so I'm trying to setup linux...now, everything works to some degree, but at some point (it seems to happen at random), my keyboard stops responding (it's an infrared keyboard/mouse that plugs into the PS/2 connectors of the mobo...). It's very strange, and rather anti-climactic since I've been anticipating a functional computer for months now...any ideas out there?


btw, insane3d, thanks for that tip about removing the jumper from WD drives - my boot speed is amazingly fast now, esp. in comparison to the 3 min that it was previously taking just to detect the IDE drives....

I'm not familiar with Linux at all, so I'm not quite sure what's up. Have you tried updating to the latest bios just to rule that out? I wonder if it is the IR mouse/kb combo not playing nice with Linux? Do you have any standard KB and/or mice around to switch out?

I doubt Linux has great support for IR anything, but I could be wrong. It's been too long since I tinkered around with linux to be sure. Do what Insane3D said and try a regular mouse/keyboard combo.

yeah...it's just weird 'cause the IR receptor plugs directly into the PS/2 ports - it should work just like a regular PS/2 keyboard. But...who knows...I'll ask my roommate for his keyboard and mouse and see what happens.

Mooncalf, the tip about the WD drive (or, at least, what worked for me) was to completely remove the jumper on the rear of the drive, rather than setting it to master, slave, or cable select. The drive seems to do what I want it to that way, and it does it *fast*.
