I flashed to the latest online Epox bios (12/21 I think).... I'll see if that fixed it, though I kinda doubt it reading through these posts

On the upside, I upgraded from the 3800x2 to an opteron 170. The 3800 maxed out at 2.2 P95 stable regardless of what I did, the opty is at 2.4 P95 stable @ 1.40V, progress!

Just tried setting it to cable select and it still won't work. Any other ideas short of buying a new SATA drive to take its place?

You mentioned that the boot order is correctly set to HD first - have you gone back into your bios and made sure that the additional further selection for the individual hard drive order is also set correctly? Sounds like your system is correctly set to boot from HD, but incorrectly trying to boot from pata and then to sata (so sata-only works fine but will not work with the pata also in there.)

I don't have it in front of me but I can look at the settings later tonight.

I had been set on this mobo until I started reading all the USB2 problems. Does the latest BIOS fix this?

Latest Bios has something to do with CPU ratio I believe,as to USB 2.0 problems well some owners have problems while some don't like me.

Until Epox confirm there is a problem if there is (reading other forums there is not a lot of info on the Epox/USB 2.0 problem, still not that common),not much you can do about it.

I have tried all but USB 2.0 HD which is next on my list ,but not quite yet, heavy spending over xmas has left me little broke.

No, I tested this morning and it still hangs on big USB2.0 transfers even with the 12/21 bios. These are hard hangs - no BSOD, no reboot, no error message in the logs, everything just freezes. Doing the same copies over firewire works fine.

OK, go into bios on startup. Under the Advanced Bios option the first selection is HD Boot Priority. Make sure this is set first for your SATA drive.

Yes the SATA is set to boot first. Maybe the only thing left to try is a reinstall of XP like RideFree suggested.

You mean that the controller on the first (returned) board was defective?
And that now, with the replacement, everything is A-OK?

^^^ Agreed...these are hangs/freezes/errors that are happening faster than the OS can detect them I believe, or low level bios errors...Epox has to know about these USB 2.0 issues...

^yes....from what i know and what has been posted here its a X2 issue.

You mean that the controller on the first (returned) board was defective?
And that now, with the replacement, everything is A-OK?

^no the new board is now doing the same thing after three months of perfect no issues with raid....

Gee whiz! I'm thinking I might have to get another EPoX just to slap my 165 in it and see WTFIU!

Maybe you wore out the M/board or CPU with an industrial O/C.

geez...all of this usb2 talk is getting old i really don't think that it is epox; probably more system/user specific. i have not "technically" had issues, but i did with my old system. i had usb2 symptoms with my old system and it would act up and freeze and i think a device driver fixed it. i have been able to transfer and burn large files fine since i built this system. don't let this talk sway you away from this board.

I installed this board tonight, and everything has been great, EXCEPT:

I have a HP USB 2.0 scanner, and everytime I plug it in to any usb port on the board I get an endles bsod -> restart loop.

Argh! Everything else has been flawless...

I've tried changing the usb to 1.1 in the bios and changing the shadowing option, but neither have helped.

Running a 3200+ processor, so the X2 thing doesn't apply here.

Any thoughts?

You see, I am planning on using a Mitsumi Floppy/USB 2.0 Card Reader as my floppy drive. It connects internally to the mobo via one of the USB 2.0 headers. I assume it makes no difference whether the USB 2.0 device is connected internally or externally? I sadly think this USB 2.0 issue is going to drive me to another company: DFI, MSI, or ASUS?

GTaudiophile: I think the concensus is the USB 2.0 problems are with high speed, high bandwidth devices so you should be fine.

I have tried and have the following which are still connected to my Epox board with my X2 3800+ .

Canon USB 2.0 printer i865:No problems.
External USB 2.0 Lite-On 1633SX DVD burner:No problems.
USB 2.0 wireless LAN device: No problems.
External 7 port NEC chipset based USB 2.0 external self powered hub: No problems.
Rest are USB 1.1 devices like mouse,keyboard,MP3 player, card reader etc....

Only thing I have not tried is USB 2.0 external HD.
Bottomline I'm happy with my board (rock solid)and have no problems, yes I'm very curious as to why some people do have problems.

I had to register after happening upon this thread.

I have been having the random freezing problem with the ep-9npa+ ultra board for some time now. Of interest, I have owned the board since its release (about a year now?), and the freezes did not exist for many months. When they did start to occur, they were when I was using a single core 3000+ processor. I routinely keep up with the latest drivers and BIOS revisions (when I think that there is a meaningful fix). No new hardware was added at the time the freezes started - I had USB 2.0 enabled on the motherboard and several USB 2.0 devices including thumb drives, printer and scanner but no external hard drive. Furthermore, the freezes were indeed random, independent of usb device usage or anything else I could nail down. Every piece of hardware in my machine (except the MB) has been replaced and the OS reinstalled multiple times but the problems have persisted - I most recently replaced my power supply thinking that was the problem. Again, of note, the freezes continued after a processor upgrade to the x2 3800+. In addition, I have no heat issues (CPU temps 44 deg max and chipset temps around 30 deg)

After reading this thread I disabled SMART monitoring which did not work. Flashed to the most recent BIOS (now the 12/21 release I believe?) which also didn't work. Installed the dual core hotfix from Microsoft - again, a no go. Subsequently, I installed a Belkin usb 2.0 PCI adapter and disabled usb 2.0 functionality in the BIOS (it is now limited to 1.1). All usb 2.0 devices are now connected to the Belkin card. I have had no freezes in 36 hours now, and I would typically have an event in this time period before. Furthermore, the computer now enters and resumes from standby more reliably than before.

All this is to say that I don't believe this problem is an x2 issue at all. It is either the result of the random failure of a hardware item on the board (capacitor?) or it is a driver problem.

In this forum: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t8928.html, several members report similar problems on an Asus board using any Forceware drivers more recent than 78.01. My personal feeling is that this is related to the Chipset drivers and usb 2.0 implementation, but I have not reverted to the original driver version to test it out (currently using 6.70).

Anyway, just my two cents on this topic. I am 50/50 on discouraging someone from buying this board based upon this issue alone, particularly if it can be easily remedied using an add-on USB adapter. It might be worth considering Epox's newest board based upon the nforce4 ultra chipset (the ep-9npa3ultra), available from the Egg here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813123258. Other than a change in board layout, I don't see any major differences from the ep-9npa+ ultra.

Happy new year, and thanks to all for the information in this thread. I will post again if I have another freeze.

thanks for your post. very interesting indeed. i'm betting now that the original ultra's have some type of component problem and epox won't fess up to it because they would lose too much money, etc. i really don't think they would engineer another board of the same specs just for a new layout. just my thoughts.
