I have been having the random freezing problem with the ep-9npa+ ultra board for some time now. Of interest, I have owned the board since its release (about a year now?), and the freezes did not exist for many months. When they did start to occur, they were when I was using a single core 3000+ processor. I routinely keep up with the latest drivers and BIOS revisions (when I think that there is a meaningful fix). No new hardware was added at the time the freezes started - I had USB 2.0 enabled on the motherboard and several USB 2.0 devices including thumb drives, printer and scanner but no external hard drive. Furthermore, the freezes were indeed random, independent of usb device usage or anything else I could nail down. Every piece of hardware in my machine (except the MB) has been replaced and the OS reinstalled multiple times but the problems have persisted - I most recently replaced my power supply thinking that was the problem. Again, of note, the freezes continued after a processor upgrade to the x2 3800+. In addition, I have no heat issues (CPU temps 44 deg max and chipset temps around 30 deg)

After reading this thread I disabled SMART monitoring which did not work. Flashed to the most recent BIOS (now the 12/21 release I believe?) which also didn't work. Installed the dual core hotfix from Microsoft - again, a no go. Subsequently, I installed a Belkin usb 2.0 PCI adapter and disabled usb 2.0 functionality in the BIOS (it is now limited to 1.1). All usb 2.0 devices are now connected to the Belkin card. I have had no freezes in 36 hours now, and I would typically have an event in this time period before. Furthermore, the computer now enters and resumes from standby more reliably than before.

All this is to say that I don't believe this problem is an x2 issue at all. It is either the result of the random failure of a hardware item on the board (capacitor?) or it is a driver problem.

In this forum: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t8928.html, several members report similar problems on an Asus board using any Forceware drivers more recent than 78.01. My personal feeling is that this is related to the Chipset drivers and usb 2.0 implementation, but I have not reverted to the original driver version to test it out (currently using 6.70).

Anyway, just my two cents on this topic. I am 50/50 on discouraging someone from buying this board based upon this issue alone, particularly if it can be easily remedied using an add-on USB adapter. It might be worth considering Epox's newest board based upon the nforce4 ultra chipset (the ep-9npa3ultra), available from the Egg here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813123258. Other than a change in board layout, I don't see any major differences from the ep-9npa+ ultra.

Happy new year, and thanks to all for the information in this thread. I will post again if I have another freeze.

Great first post and welcome!

Too bad that new Epox board doesn't have IEEE! Otherwise, it might be what I go with.

Have we questioned SP 2?
I remember SP 2 broke a lot of things when it first came out...
We've questioned everything else... I'm at the point of doing a re-install and stopping at SP 1.1 (although USB 2.0 works for me now, I still have no access to one particular NAS).
Edited: I just had to re-boot the USB drive in order to get rid of the "Unknown Device".

Mem, I've stayed out fo this thread up 'til now, as it seems to have developed a life of it's own. However, your post on what you've been using re USB 2.0 devices caught my eye, as I'm using many of the same devices (Canon scanner, Canon printer (IP5000), Lexar multi-card reader.

What I have used, that you referenced, is an external hard drive. Specifically it's this unit. I'm using it in conjunction w/ Acronis TrueImage 8 and it does a fine job of providing me w/ a quick, reliable backup image.

It's a nice thought, but not really an option for me, and I'd imagine for other people. My copy of WinXP has SP2 slipstreamed.

While I certainly don't recall the problems occurring prior to the SP2 install, I can't definitely confirm that they started right afterwards either. Due to the random nature of the freezes, it's hard to nail down a specific event, particulary if you are one to stay on top of driver updates and patches.

Nonetheless, I am becoming more and more convinced that this is indeed a USB 2.0 issue on this board. Still no freezes for me after 48 hours of disabling USB 2.0 in the BIOS. I'll re-enable it at the end of the week to see if I can cause the problem to re-occur.

Mine too.

Jeff H: I probably get one down the road but in no rush at moment. Most of my BIOS settings are default for USB.

I'll be curious to know if you guys have tried different Nvidia chipset drivers etc..apart from 6.70 ...

I also have SP1 slipstreamed as well as SP2 copies. How can you no longer have the original XP?
It's not like you can overwrite the original disk...or shouldn't I ask...

I own this board and have never had a problem with USB. I have found out though, if you disable the Parallel Port, the system won't always boot...

well I still use parallel port because my printer was first used by Thomas Jefferson. Although great printer =) Anyways, so board still stable today? I shouldn't take newegg reviews too literally... it's like heroine. Every board has it's issues and always chance need to RMA it. But still... I hear layout can be annoying too for RAM and power connector.

What have most you been able to up your HTT (FSB) speeds to? Mine maxed out at around 330MHz. Anyone top that?

Registerred just to get in on this discussion.

Is anyone using their onboard firewire? I attempted to setup a new computer using this board last night. No matter what I did, windows would not detect the onboard firewire ports. Even plugging in a firewire device resulted in nothing happening. This is all using a slipstreamed XP Pro SP2 install.

In addition, I tried to install three different PCI cards and none would work. The first, chaintech av-710 soundcard, wouldn't work because the installer could detect the card. I tried reseating it several times and using all three pci slots. Same end result. The second card was a turtle beach santa cruz. The installer completed but the device would show up with an exclamation point in the device manager with the problem 'device could not start'. Attempting to get into the turtle beach control panel just resulted in the software telling me that it couldn't find a turtle beach card. The third card was an add on usb2/firewire card. Windows would install some of the software (USB2 appeared to get installed for it) but not firewire. This was all done using the newest NF4 drivers (6.82), the AMD X2 Patch, and the windows hotfix.

Any suggestions? I'm pulling my hair out over here because I've tried everything I can possibly think of.

Another newbie (=O) question, what is the default voltage for a 3500+ (Venice). When I set the default voltage to "Auto", it puts it at 1.5v, which seems a lot, since the FX-60 seen in the latest Anandtech article is O/Ced to 2.8 GHZ with 1.4v....

reynrv, you did install the mobo software right? as for the firewire, i have never used mine, but everything seems fine, AND it shows up under my network connections as 1394.

Orcishhuman, i looked up 2 different 3500 venice's and their default voltages were 1.35 and 1.35/1.40. your oc is upping your voltage.

yeah, I installed the NF4 drivers. I'm pretty much convinced that the board is defective. I havent been able to see the 1394 connection in the device manager or network connections.

The board was bought in the beginning of December (from newegg) but it was an xmas gift so I didnt get to try it out til yesterday. Should I be okay to RMA it to newegg? Thanks.

i think newegg would take a rma, especially if you had to contact them by email to let them know it was a christmas gift. i think you should try something first. uninstall all of your nvidia drivers (you have to do this prior to installing a new release anyway, for nf4). then reinstall them. or better yet, start from scratch and just use the mobo cd only to see it everything works at first. you don't update if everything is not working in the first place. i thought i could install the new nf4 drivers over my old ones, but it messed up my system and i lost a lot of data. i recommend you try to rebuild first. good luck.

Ok, I've tried that. I used a fresh SP2 install and the chipset cd that came with the motherboard and still the same thing. Windows doesnt show any signs of a firewire host controller and I still can't get a PCI card installed. Back to Newegg it does, I guess. :-(
