I think I'm going to get an Epox motherboard.. they seem to be highly recommended and are at good prices But, what's the difference between all of them? I'm looking for one to use with a 1ghz Duron and DDR ram.

8K7A
8KHA
8KHAL

What's the differences between them all? From NewEgg the prices are all about $1 within each other. Which one is the best?

BTW, I don't overclock, but it would be nice to be able to in the future. Also, if there are any other good mobos under $80, please do mention it!

8K7A was a great board in it's day. And still is one of the best AMD 760 boards, but AMD 760 has passed the torch to KT266A and 8KHA+ and 8KHAL use KT266A. 8KHA+ is definatley while a no-thrills board compared to boards like the A7V266-E and Dragon+, is still one of the best overclocking boards out there and can be had for $98 at newegg. Highly recommened. The difference between 8KHA+ and 8KHAL is that the 8KHAL has 5 PCI (8KHA+ has 6) and 8KHAL according to Newegg has NO overclocking. I'd say go for the 8KHA+

Yep another vote for Epox 8KHA+ it`s one very stable board and very easy to setup only one jumper (100/133 fsb one) to worry about.

<< Does it really matter that much if a chipset is old? >>

Depends. If u wan a faster mobo...then old chipset is not the type u wan. If u r just lookin at a decent setup for ur daily wordprocessing, net surfing some accounting...then the old chipset might just suit u as they r cheaper.

Well here's why I say go 8KHA+:

1. It's about 10-15% faster than 8K7A
2. 8K7A uses the horrid VIA 686B south bridge which is notorious for isssues with Creative SB Live! and Audigy Sound Cards
3. I doubt 8K7A will be any cheaper than 8KHA+. 8K7A retailed at it's highest at $130 and prolly would've come down at most to $100, which is right where 8KHA+ is.

I have an 8k7a and have to say it's the best motherboard I've owned in a long time! (except for the fact it fried itself, but Epox took care that for me.)

Another thing, you can get the 8K7A with Highpoint RAID (8K7A+). I don't think EPoX makes a 8KHA with RAID.

Time for my 2cents. I have an 8KHA+ and I had an 8KHA before that. Not to mention an 8KTA3 before that. I would go with the 8KHA+ you can pick one up for around $90-100 and it's a great board. KT266A chipset instead of the AMD 761 which is being discontinued. Or the KT266 which others (I never did) had issues with. Or you could opt for the 8KHAL from newegg or another retailer. Cheaper than the 8KHA+ but you do lose 1 PCI slot and it only has 3 DIMM slots instead of 4.

Hmm.. it's $80 on NewEgg.. within the price range of the epox boards I was considering. Is it an OK overclockers board? I don't plan on overclocking but having that ability in the future would be nice!

Thanks for the help, everyone.

It's definately not the overclocker that 8KHA+ is but, It's a solid board. I'd definately recommend it if u don't want to go for 8KHA+ but I personally think that 8KHA+ is worth the extra $20. Just my 2c, but anyway, you'd be safe with AK31A.

I just got a Shuttle AK31A motherboard and i'm very happy with it. It's a very stable board and yes it does have many overclocking options. I'm using a 300w generic power supply w/ two hard drives and 5 of 6 pci slots filled and it hasn't skipped a beat. But I will add,I also own an Epox motherboard and it's a solid board as well.
