I bought several of these the last go around. Great printer!! Now if we could find a similarly great deal on replacement ink?? Seems most places don't have these replacement cartridges yet.

I found the gift card "rebate" by shopping for an Epson 870 printer.

When the printer description is displayed, there is a rebate banner.
Click on the "see rebate" link.

The rebate form (downloadable PDF file) is for a free $20 OfficeMax "gift card", with the purchase of "a Epson Printer" (no apparent restriction to certain models!), good through 16-June-01.

There is the PDF to print out for the $20 gift card when purchasing any Epson printer at OfficeMax. PM if they take this down and you need it (I archived a copy on my website).

eteam: thanks for mentioning this - I didn't want to try to find the coupon at the B&M store... This brings the total price down to $62.38 shipped if you count the gift card as cash! Even though I complain about OfficeMax.com's website alot I do like their policy of taking the coupon out of the total before charging for tax (unlike some other websites out there).

All the Epson photo-printers use the same cartridge. I followed WheelerDealer's advice and used the Outpost prices to match at Staples. I just printed out the pages for the two cartridge types and took them to the store. The clerk accepted the match without a word.

<< But the real question is is the 780 worth twice the price? >>

Probably not. The successor to the 870 is the 890 (MSRP $250 without a card reader), not the 780. The 7xx printers are designed for a lower price point and the quality difference is apparent when you put them side by side. Also, the higher resolution of the newer printers, while using much more time and ink, is invisible to the naked eye.

This printer is a good deal at $100. Throw in the discount coupon and gift certificate and you have a deal that's very hard to pass up.

As for the difference between
the 780 and 880....I'll take a crack it this question

Epson 780 prints up to 2880 x 720 dpi and is a 6 Color Photo Quality Printer.
It also has the boarderless printing feature (prints out 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 etc)

The 880 is also 2880 x 720 dpi...but is a 4 Color Printer and doesn't have the boarderless print feature.

6 color is supposed to be much better for photo printing since it allows for much smoother gradations...along with the boarderless print feature it makes the 780 a better choice if you are looking for a photo printer.

The 875 is 1440 x 720 has boarderless print and is 6 color...Plus it has the compact flash input...

Athena: are you sure the 7xx line is lower quality than the 8xx/12xx line?

Optionally, buy Refill ink from here (Link). Kind of a pain in the butt, but saves alot of $$ if you are going to be printing very much.

A: Have you ordered from there? Did you get the dye or archival inks?

quick correction:
the 870/875 doesn't do borderless prints. the next gen 890 does.

this is a good reference site site
I copied the below from teh site above

all printers in the same line have the same print quality:
Epson 600/800
Epson 740/none
Epson 860/1160
Epson 900/none
Epson Photo 700/EX
Epson Photo 750/1200
Epson Photo 870/875/1270
Epson Photo 780/890/1290

visual comparison of printouts
IMO the 780 and 870/875 are practically identical with some slight color variation due to ink, which you can override in software.

< A: Have you ordered from there? Did you get the dye or archival inks? >

Yes, no complaints about the vendor. They shipped very quickly. I just got the dye ink for now. I have not had to refill yet. Am only down to about 10% on my color cart right now.

I got the 875 deal awhile back. have been very happy with the printer. Skin tones out of the box are alittle on the pinkish side, but can be adjusted.

<< are you sure the 7xx line is lower quality than the 8xx/12xx line? >>

Yes it is a lower quality line and it's usually apparent just from visual inspection in the store. The 7xx printers are slower and noiser. The print quality of the 780 may be as good as the 890 or 1290, but the printer itself is not as good as the 875. It's hard to think of good reason for anyone to buy a 780 with the 875 deal still available. The only real advantage the 780 has is that it will do edge to edge printing on 8½" x 11" paper. Most people who really need that though will want a better printer overall. For the non-graphic specialist, the edge to edge 4" x 6" capability of the 870/875 will be sufficient.

<< i did notice that the 880 is cheaper now at compusa. how would you guys compare the three? >>

The current 880 deal is very good too. The question you have to ask yourself is how much actual photo printing do you expect to do. The 880 is faster, has very nice graphics and its supplies are cheaper. The estimated yield for the 880 black cartridge is 900 pages versus 540 pages for the 870 black cartridge and there are far more third party choices for the 880. If your printing is primariy text and graphics with only occasional photos, the CompUSA deal on the 880 is probably for you.

<< Outpost.com raised their prices on both cartridges >>

is right! In that case, Epson is probably the best source for those who want to order just one or two cartridges since their prices include free shipping. Imageton is offering fairly decent prices ($19.15 for black and $16 for color) but you have to buy $75 worth to get free shipping there.

Amazon has the color cartridge for $14.94 and the black cartridge for $17.94. One black cartridge can last very long, so don't order too many black. Use coupon to save more. Also, I highly recommand the high-quality Epson Plemium Glossy Photo Paper. Amazon's price is one of the cheapest prices on the net.

The printer arrived today! Everything seems to be in order. Nice looking printer, both ink carts, paper roll and loader, along with all software and documentation seem to be here. (I remember some people said that they had missing parts in their boxes). I couldn't be more pleased. Now I just need to find a outlet to plug this thing in and we're set! Oh, and the CF adapter was included, too. Too cool!

Uh-oh. I think I need a USB cable. Anyone know of a good price?

Anyone else still on CBO status? Should I call in or do you guys just wait? I haven't dealt much with OfficeMax.com. I too am interested in a USB printer cable. Is the cable for the 875DC a concentric on the printer end or one of the USB type plugs?

Athena: Thanks for making that clear. I wasn't sure if you meant build quality or print quality. I agree with your reasoning on the bordless printing for full pages. I can't wait to print out some photos with the 875DC.

I called OM again today to verify th eorder status of my order. The CSR seemed clueless as the order showed the printer CBO. She couldn't gimme a hint of the possibility of getting my printer. But she was sure if we don't get it within 7 days, it will be most likely we are not getting one.

You can plug the printer in a parallel port or USB port. If using USB, the print speed wil be much faster. Get a USB cable from Amazon for $4.95 with the inks and photo papers together to save more on shipping. Use coupon to save even more. That's what I did too.

I got mine back when they were $69. I just noticed that they still had some around last week. See if they can send them from another warehouse.

Nolamerz is right, the 875DC is a USB only printer. It uses a standard USB device cable and there have been several discussions of good deals on those over the past month. See these two threads for leads --
May 15 and May 23. I seem to remember that someone else found a surprisingly good price at Amazon.

Regarding the BackOrder status of these orders: That's common. Office Max seems to be getting periodic shipments from Epson as the the supplies dry up and they are shipped from a central site. You can expect a 7-10 day delay before it ships then allow another week after that for it to appear at your door.
