I played EQ 1 for years and then tried eq2 and WOW, But now I am looking for somthing that can keep me occupided late at night when I try to get getready to work Night shift.
I work a 12 hr swing shift

I thought about going back to eq 1 and trying a Necromancer, I played both a Enchanter and a Cleric to lv 60 somthing but found that if I wasnt on all the time it became hard to find groups, this is what lead me to quit EQ1.

As a necromancer not finding a group should not hinder me so that is why I am considering EQ1 again.

One reason I thought it might be a abandoned game is that when i tried to register on a Nerco forum I have been waiting for a month to get approved by the moderator to post.
Also very few forums have many curent post

EQ1 is still active, they just released an expansion to it a month or so ago. Its population is considerably smaller now though because of its age and other MMOs.

ok thanks, I have always like to group more than solo but it just became hard to do at high lv's. I got invites from several high end guilds and one that was known to be the highest ranked guild but after I went to there web site and saw the requirments for time on a raid participation I had to let them I couldn't join.

It just helps me alot to have somthing that I will enjoy to do to 3 or 4am so I wont be so tired on my first day on night shift.

As a Nerco I dont think not finding a group will hinder me much.

Wow was a decent solo game but I just didnt enjoy it as much for some reason.

WoW is extremely solo friendly. Naturally, there is SOME content that will not be available to you unless you group but a very good portion the game is accessible to solo players... especially hunters and warlocks.

WoW actually made their way into the market on the warcraft name bringing people in AND the strong point was also that it is "casual friendly" while still rewarding the hardcore. I played both styles and quit mid-way into AQ as being in a top 3 guild on the server, being the main hunter blah blah. I was hardcore when I quit, came back casual... quit came back with BC played around a little and quit.

It is definitely the most solo-friendly game out there as far as risk vs rewards goes IMO. I loved EQ1 though, it was my first MMO and it brought a challenge like no other. Traveling was harder, there was an actual penalty for death besides time lost running back, and you had to fight your way back or get a res (and as a cleric, the ressurection business was good). It was definitely not for the faint of heart and didn't really offer much in the way of casuals. But as a necro/bard and later on in the game mage or shaman, you could solo efficiently to earn money to buy the items you wanted since you could aquire very nice items that could be traded.

Actually I just started playing Vanguard, and although its rep isn't that great from the early release and all the bugs, I like it. Due to Mcquaid being the project leader(Director whatever you want to call it) on both, it has the same feel, but with better graphics, better quests, nicer interface etc. It took some of the better things from newer MMOs and brought them into the EQ feel. There is still that death penalty but you won't lose a level, you will aquire exp debt, there is a couple new ways to go about a CR as far as exp return is concerned. The PvP isn't as great as WoW or DAoC and shadowbane WERE(not are), but what I do like about it over WoW is that the person just doesn't have to do a CR, they actually lose 15% of the coin they have on PvP servers... so the person actually suffers a loss if they lose in battle against another player. They also have a FFA PvP server which is great to keep people in check and not acting like assholes, I went with the Team PvP because I prefer the Realm vs Realm feel, but I like the FFA server idea as well.

The only bad thing towards the PvP in terms of it evolving is the game is like EQ1, 80% PvE subs and probably 20% PvP if that. The game's focus is also mainly PvE like EQ1, so they are going to concentrate on fixing and adding PvE content before PvP. I don't believe they are alloted to funds to have the proper size team to devote a good group to strictly PvP content from what I can understand, but thats just hearsay.

The good thing for the carebears is they claim that they will balance the PvP combat outside of PvE, so if they decide a class is too powerful solely in PvP and not PvE as well they might scale an ability against other players but not against mobs.

So if you like EQ1 maybe you should give vanguard a try, the gameplay is very similiar with a few things added in. It will require a decent machine to play it on though. So far I have no problems with my aging Athlon 3700+, 1gb ram, x850xt... on what I'd call the lower end of medium settings and the graphics are still a delight. I do plan on upgrading within a couple of months though so I can play these newer games on higher settings, but If you have something near the RECOMMENDED (not required) hardware you should be just fine. Just make sure to get all the latest drivers/ dx etc.

I also tried vanguard at the Lauch date and continued for about a month and a half.
You are right it is a very demanding game as far as hardware. But i have a newer PC Core 2 DUO e6600 at 3.7 , 2 gigs of ram and a evga 7950 GT KO GPU.
But the Game was very buggy.
I read that on EQ 1 both health Regen and Mana Regen was improved drasticly.
Loot was also suposed to be improved a lot.
Crafting system in Vanguard was cool but had some bugs in it. Death in vanguard was not near the issue it was in EQ1 but Making Death peanalty more usaly made you more Carful of what you were doing. You could also retive your corpse easy in EQ 1 too.
Mounts were cheap in Vanguard that was somthing I liked a lot.
I may go back to vanguard, I just need to give it some more thought, tje Idea of lving up both a Nerco and Shaman in EQ 1 seem to have my attention right now.

As for the forum, if I recall, IGE bought all the class forums out. They're probably just platinum-selling sites now. Game/class discussion is likely centralized on their forums now. If nothing else, it makes it easier to censor out any posts claiming Sony/SOE doesn't fart perfume. Censorship is a great business model, glad to see it worked out so well for them ... ...

EQ1 is basically dead. I wouldn't bother. Last time I tried was in January, and even on the new servers (progressive) the population was basically nothing... Even in zones like Paulidal Caverns (a big noobie zone) I'd say 90% of the time I was in there alone. Maybe 80 people max in Plane of Knowledge (a hub).... 80 people selling wares in the bazaar.

EQ1 on every server that I've tried was basically the top 3 raiding guilds online doing a raid and nobody else to be found. I tried my old characters on old servers and nill. Nothing...

I still think EQ1 is one of the better games out there, but it's a sinking ship, people have abandoned it.

Wow, talk about disinformation.

I just restarted on Firiona Vie, one of the least populated servers. Always over 100 in PoK. On last check there were 229 SELLERS (thats just people in trader mode) in the bazaar. Everquest raiding is still in full swing.

The low levels are definately tougher, harder to find groups. Hotzones help this out a lot, funneling people into those zones for their level range. Once you get to 60ish, grouping is just like it always was in EQ. With the newest expansion, (and once you're lvl 75) you can obtain some great armor once obtain ally faction with Katta. Goto lucy.allakhazam.com and search for praetorian armor and look at the stuff your class can wear. Its amazing stuff to be able to get it through grouping rather than raiding.

It musta picked up then, because my old server was FV, and it was pretty much dead when I checked it in January. Maybe people gave up during that time for Vanguard and decided to come back. I'm not sure, but it was pretty dead on there last I checked.

I'm not trying to spread disinformation, as I said EQ1 is still one of the btter games out there and I'd love to see people still playing it. However, I was just relaying what I experienced back in January.

You had yourself a portable group machine. Just add 3 dps and go. Yeah, FV is definately less populated than other servers, but by no means close to dead.
