Placed security freeze for all 3 bureaus for both my spouse and I. Took like 20 minutes and 70 bucks. Will have to pull reports later, just wanted to get this done. Good thread.

Oh, and the fact that Equifax will not let you generate your own PIN and rather provides you a 10 digit pin with the first 6 digits being the fucking date .... I don't even. They should all go to prison for security that is this bad.

I'm not paying for other people's fuck-ups. I'd rather get identity theives to fuck my credit up so I can find a lawyer that looks like this:

This is so messed up. Went to put a freeze on my account and the online process doesn't work. Tells me to mail my information, including my CC# for payment to them. So now I'm supposed to trust a company with even more information through the mail? Is this a joke?

This whole situation does not even seem real. Unfortunately I was on the list, but not have done anything yet.

I will temper my previous post. Looks like since I'm on the list I get free monitoring and credit freeze by going through the registration process. Just waiting on the email to complete the process.

Am I naive for thinking these people are more commendable than the crooks at Experian?
Yes.
How can you even trust one crook over more crooks? (and it is Equifax, though, they all have all your info.)

If they do pay, and they release the info anyway, then, you just made even more crooks that want to do this to basically everyone else.

That whole message is a load of BS, "we don't want to affect any citizen, but, we want $$$", and they will get it no matter what Equifax does.

Equifax.exes have stopped responding to the system because they're having a party due to the large windfall they'll get from being incompetent.

Execs having a party:

I read a article the other day about this security breach. In it they stated equifax wasn't going to send out any kind of paper notifications to it users. The user had to go online to see if they were effected. I thought few years ago a law was passed that these companies had to notify it users that they had a security breach?

Equifax should be bankrupted with lawsuits. If anything, that's one less bureau to pay to freeze and unfreeze your credit.

I hope there are some Congressional hearings on this. Not that i care for Congress, but it will be nice to see some E Corp execs roasted in front of Congress.

This congress will hold hearings, but they won't do anything. House Republicans just voted in July to allow people to be forced into arbitration, as Equifax is trying to do.

Some guy bought 145k worth of Put options on equifax and made 4 million dollars.

He bought the options in late august and the hack happened in july/august. It was revealed in late august to Equifax.

Average monthly option volume for Equifax stock is <2k

I wish i had been watching the volume I would've bought it too. 10000x average volume is a huge red flag for insider trading.

CNBC picked it up too

And that guy will be getting a visit from SEC and FBI.

I would hope so.

Somebody stated that it was probably the hackers. That would be really, really, really dumb of them. It would be an easy way to tie them to the hack.

My guess is it was some equifax executive. Maybe the same moron CFO that sold his shares. These guys don't seem to have a high regard for the SEC's abilities or motivations. I can't say I blame them.

SEC has spent more time going after nobodies like martha stewart than actually regulating on big money traders like Goldman Sachs.

meh. Getting ass chewed by Congress is nothing. Any CEO or executive would gladly take one for the team if that's all it took. People need to be fired and go to jail and compensation clawed back. No one will volunteer for that.

Just found this on reddit. Checked my PIN... yep, date followed by timestamp. Aren't there like, security experts working at these places?

Here's some more news. All data to be released on 9/15 unless Equifax pays 600 BitCoin ($2.66 million). I feel like the executives who sold their stock should be forced to pay the ransom. Yeah, it will only encourage more attacks, but there will be more attacks regardless. If the hackers still release the information after payment, at least the executives lost their winnings. Hopefully this is a wake up call and we actually learn something and evolve instead of putting a cheap band-aid over it.

Equifax, but yeah. Make the execs pay the ransom, then prosecute them. Toss them in jail. IF these guys do not, at the very least, see a trial in front of a jury, the plebs will revolt.

Oh I'm sure the plebs will buy the next iWhatever & all will be forgotten & forgiven, in due course of time. There's an inevitability in all this, now if only there was a revolt.

I can almost guarantee you they timed the news dump to the hurricane. Meaning they let this information be out there without victims knowing unnecessarily long. FBI needs to go to town.

File this under more BS.
Here is another "credit reporting" company... It is Innovis aka CBCInnovis. https://www.innovis.com/personal/creditReport

So, you actually need to freeze with these bozos as well?
4 companies, $10 each, for each person of your family.
What a racket.

At least with Innovis, you can check the box stating you believe you are a victim of identity theft, and you won't have to pay the freeze fee.

Don't forget about ChexSystems. These guys are associated with bank accounts, and a security freeze is free.

Isn't it great, though? A company who makes money off your personal data screws up, and you have to pay them in order to protect yourself.

I read that the bad guys could lay low for a while and then file your tax return before you do. This is a freaking mess.

Some bastards are on it already. This just came in on my spam email folder.
