Equifax Sucks.

I am in the process of trying to remove a fraud alert from my credit report because my mortgage company requested that I do so during the process of buying a house. OK, no problem. Right?

I put together three packets with all of the information requested by the bureaus and overnighted them. I decided to call Equifax to confirm that I had done this properly.

While on the phone the lady informs me that there is a discrepancy in my name (the suffix is not on my profile). She asks me if I want to fix that. I say sure, no problem, and fax the information. I hear nothing more of it. A few days goes by and I get an email from Equifax saying that my credit profile has been updated. I opened it up and it told me that my name had been successfully corrected. Great! But what about my fraud alert? It turns out, they completely ignored my fax and, when they received my fraud alert removal paperwork in the mail, they used that information to fix my name but not remove the fraud alert.

At this point I'm a little annoyed, but mostly at myself.

So I call them back and tell them what happened. They ask me to fax my information over, and so I do. A week goes by and I've heard nothing. So I call them back and they say they've not received anything from me. I confirmed that the correct fax number was the same as the number I faxed the paper to last week and it was. So I asked, what am I to do now? She said to fax the stuff over again and I'll be good. Then she started trying to sell me their credit monitoring service blah blah blah. No ma'am, the only reason I am still on the line is because I want to know exactly what documents you want me to fax. She then confirmed that it was what I had faxed previously, but I will do it again. Once more.

I checked my credit report this morning and TransUnion and Experian have already removed the fraud alert from my profile. Why does Equifax suck so much?

I will wait another 3-5 days as they requested and will call them back. If they throw the same lines of BS at me I will probably go to consumer affairs. Anyone have any other alternatives? Do any of you work for Equifax?

Be happy they're doing anything at all. They have almost no incentive to correct anything - you don't (directly) pay their bills. They're bastards. Only reason they're not worse is govt' regulation..

I agree. Between the three bureaus, EQ is the worst, for anything. Funny thing is though, its my highest FICO haha

At least EQ lets consumers check their FICO Score. Experian stop allowing consumers to check their own FICO score. If you want to know your own Experian FICO score, you can't, unless you sign up for a loan and ask the bank to show you what score they got.

If you have a friend that's a lawyer, have him/her write a mean sounding letter for you. Always seems to work when you need extra weight pushed around.

I use equifax and love them <pokes stick at OP>

Actually, I do and they serve my purpose. But they down sized my 1st rep a couple of years ago. She was excellent at her job and could answer any question I had. Now, I've got some pecker wood that doesn't know his a** from a hole in the ground.

Additionally, I seldom use a service of theirs that's .25 per use. So I may have a $1/month (or less). Being the tight bastard that I am, I send them $10 so I can save postage. They send me a bill every month without the credit so I have to call them to get another department to apply it.

There are a few credit unions you can join to get a monthly EX score BTW

What you got was a their PLUS score. It is their alternative to the FICO score. No one in the industry uses that score or looks at it. They all use the FICO score, which you cannot see.

That's a bit backwards. The only reason these three bureaus exist is due to government regulations giving them a monopoly on collecting private information which is illegal for anyone else (except the government, of course) to collect. They make money by turning around and selling that information to anyone willing to pay their fee.

It boggles my mind that it is permitted for all of us to be unwillingly entered into a system that rates us, using measure and factors and formulas that they won't reveal to us, making us pay to see exactly what they think of us (or won't, Experian), and to top it all off, their system has a huge affect on the most important aspects of our lives - buying a home, getting a job, buying a car...They should be forced to reveal the scores for free (to the individual, lenders can pay for them), and the equations they use for creating the score. It's ridiculous.

Have you equifax haters heard of first search? If you're interested, this will make you dislike a lot of other places as well.

Ex: You order a pizza, give your name, address and phone #. They sell that to equifax, who combines and sorts all the data they have on you. Then sell it to people like my trying to track down my skips. Win for me, sucks for my deadbeats.
