Hi everyone,
A friend has just rung me up with the following symptoms:
Just as windows 98se finishes loading and all the desktop icons have nearly finished appearing,
he gets the above error message. It also says "system cannot find specified file".
When he tries to get onto the net (through his 56k modem), he gets "this page cannot be displayed".
I cannot find this wierd sounding .dll on my pc and don't know how to help him.
He has rung his ISP and they can't help.
The only other thing he could think of, was his imesh icon was no longer loading to the task bar (down where the clock is).
Thanks for your help.

I forgot to mention, he tried reinstalling win98 but no success.

I've got this file on mine:
newdotnet2_84.dll
but I don't know what installed it.

Maybe you can run some regcleaners for him
& get rid of any references to it.

www.new.net
maybe

So it's listing the error in a shortened "DOS" 8.3 format.
Is that normal, or did He run an old disk utility that shortens
the Windows Long filenames?

I looked with regedit and found it referenced by the 8.3 name.
There's something called "Newdotnetstartup" I disabled in my system configuration
window.
Seems to work OK, I disabled it a few days ago.
(Basically because I didn't know what it was.)

Thanks for your reply Greg,
I'd like to try the regcleaner option, are these available for download, or would he have to purchase one?

Before you do all that:
first click
<start>
<Programs>
<accessories>
<system tools>
<system information>

OK, it will open up a window "Microsoft System Information"
Under the title it will have the "file" "Edit" "View" "tools" & "Help" spaces.
Click on "tools"
You'll get a dropdown menu, pick "system configuration utility"

Now you have another window with "tabs" at the top.
Click on the one that says "Startup"
You should have a list of items, just scroll down the list and find the one
that says "New.net Startup" or "newdotnetstartup".
You may have to scroll Left to right to see it.
When you find it, remove the checkmark in the box next to it.

If you look down the list you will probably see alot more
annoying programs that like to start all by themselves.
(Realplayer, Icq, AIM, MSN,)
You can remove some of them too.
BECAREFUL, watch where the program file is actually located.
Some of these you don't want to mess with.
I try to make a shortcut to the ones I might want to restart.
Then if I want them to start, I can just click on the shortcut I made.

MAYBE after you remove the item and reboot,
the connection will work.
At least it should get rid of that error message.

Thanks Greg, it now boots to desktop without the error
However, he still can't get on the net. When he tries he gets this message in the very top blue bar of IE5...
res://c:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm
We looked in his system folder and that .dll is there. Do you have any more suggestions?
Thanks for your help so far.

Hey,
What ISP is your friend using?
Is it showing that it's connected?
(the little green monitors flashing down by the clock)

Does it appear to be connected, but you only get the
"DNS error" page. Is IE the only one that w'ont connect?

We are in Australia, so you prob haven't heard of the ISP, but he is getting the little pc icons that flash green, then the message.
IE5 is part of win98 isn't it, so there is no point downloading it for him, because as I said, he has reinstalled 98?

Hopefully one of these steps may help you:
(page at Microsoft)
Microsquish

I changed DSL providers and thought I would never get it
to work right. PITA:disgust:

Try the easier ones first.

Grrrr, nothings working, went to MS page, got excited over all their suggestions, came away dissapointed. My friend does not want to have to format hd for what should be such a fixable prob.
If anyone has any more ideas they would be appreciated.

Check out this link

what you will find there:

<< The NewDotNet software is surreptitiously bundled with unrelated software and ISP setup utilities in typical Foistware fashion. This software consists of a browser "plug-in" DLL (e.g. newdotnet2_78.dll), which is placed in the user's Windows folder. The file is normally placed in C:\Windows\ and run silently at start-up (via Rundll32) by a Run key placed in the Windows registry. According to the NewDotNet Web site, a New Net affiliate gets 5 cents for each system the plugin is successfully installed on. >>

netdotnet2.dll is a form of spyware that screws your internet connection setup. Check out the above link for info on how you got it and how to remove.
