I just got finished putting together my new rig......

Abit NF7-S2
AMD 2500 Barton
MSI Radeon 9800Pro
512 meg of Corsair PC3200

I used an old Quantum fireball HDD for this rig cuz my maxtor 250 is out of service for now....and this HDD already had windows 98 SE on it. So i put the XP disk in and booted from cd, everything went good till it got the part when it said that......I think it's meaning HDD, isn't ACPI compliant or something. And told me to reboot, and try and update bios, but it's a brand new board just got it like 3 days ago. And to also trying to hold F7 when your prompted to install a storage device.......but it never prompted me for that. So i seriously have no clue about what to do..........can someone help

Could you post the exact message?

Off the top of my head - I heard Quantum Fireballs tended to die so it maybe a bad drive (like you already hadn't thought of that)

I also see you have Corsair Ram. I had problems installing XP with some weird hardware errors because my board was not providing the 2.75v my Corsair XMS needed. Once I upped it - no problems.

Good luck!

Ok sorry for my sluggard reply.......

A problem has been detected and Windows has been Shutdown to prevent damage.

If this is your first time you've seen this Stop error screeen, restart computer. If it happens again follow these steps

The BIOS in your system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor or visit www.Hardware-Update.com for an updated BIOS or latest BIOS. If you are unable to obtain an updated BIOS supplied by your vendor is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup. To do this suimply press F7 key when you are prompted to, when pressed it will silently disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation

Technical Information

**** STOP: 0x000000A5 (0X00000011, 0X00000007, F88860C0, 0X0100000E)

There it is, now surely someon can help right?

That error has nothing to do with your hard drive - it's completely about your motherboard's BIOS.

First thing I would do is check for that updated BIOS. If there isn't one, or if that didn't fix anything, check to see if ACPI is enabled in your BIOS. Again, if it's not there, or is enabled, then start windows XP setup, and right when the blue screen txt part of setup starts (says to press F6 to add any SCSI drivers) hit F7 to diable ACPI for windows.

I am not saying everything would work fine. That might not be the problem. I am saying that XP should not check for ACPI compliancy anymore, but then when I disable my integrated sound XP still loads the drivers. So you never know.

I find that a lot of strange BIOS related problems on new, out of the box boards can be corrected by resetting the CMOS. Hence my post above suggesting resetting the CMOS.

Very simple, very quick.

I usually try it. If it doesn't fix it, I have at least ruled it out and I can move on to try other things.

I take issue with your assumption that the BIOS should not need updating as it's a brand new board. Who knows how long it has sat on a shelf? Regardless, there could still be a newer BIOS.

Ok i did reset CMOS and then i disabled that Power saver thing, and i guess that worked......because now when i load XP it doesn't give me any errors. So it finished setting up and then it said your computer will now restart, and if you have a disk in the floppy please remove it now. But i didn't..........and it said that when it reboots setup will continue. But when it rebooted it said at post boot from CD: and then.....press any button to boot from CD. But i didn't want it to start setup again so i didn't hit any button...and then it said Missing operating system....???

So then i removed the CD and changed my Boot sequences to First boot HDD, and then second boot CD. and restarted and it still said missing operating system. What am i supposed to do.

And i appreciate all of yalls help alot Thanks

To save time, the system requirement for an install of XP Home or Pro is 1.5GB according to Microsoft. Now, I can't remember how much it really takes up, but I'm certain it's twice that or very close to it.

Try this.

First off enable the Power Saver thing. That was not the problem.

Make sure your BIOS recognizes the drive at full capacity. I don't know how old this drive is. It should be automatically recognized (sounds as if it is), but I want you to make certain the full size of the drive is seen by the BIOS.

Also, make certain that the drive is recognized as it is jumpered/cabled. If it's jumpered as Master and on IDE 1, make sure that is where the BIOS sees it. These checks are very important.

Assuming all that is fine, set your boot order as follows;

Floppy
HDD
CD-ROM

It's not imperative it be set up this way, but we will be on the same page for any future troubleshooting.

Insert the CD and when prompted boot off it. (In other words, if you get a prompt to press any key, do that).

Leave the CD in until the system boots to the desktop for the last time. After the first reboot, it still needs to copy a lot of files over. There should be enough copied for it to boot off the HD. You know this already. And other that removing the CD, everything you did should have been OK. It should have booted off the HD and prompted you for the CD when it didn't find it.

Carefully go through all the BIOS/HD steps above. Post back with your results.

OK i checked everything. The bios sees the full capacity of the drive. I have set my boot order to Floppy HDD and CD-ROM. But when i boot up like that it says missing operating system. So I tired to reload XP again. And when i was supposedly finished copying files and all that good stuff, it says it has to reboot to finish. That is when it's supposed to start up XP Pro and then finish copying and extracting........

But i never get to that point. When it finishs rebooting it says.....Missing operating system. Does this mean something is wrong with my HDD?

It sounds as if you're OK HD wise, although I am concerned about the size of the drive. Windows needs a litttle room to roam and I'm afraid you're going to be chaining it to the fence.

I think you've got a BIOS setting wrong. On first reboot, it's not looking at the IDE drive for an OS. If you'd had an error copying files on the first go round, I believe Windows would be smart enough to know that and tell you.

It should have booted.

well.......it says

Setup cannot copy file regedit.hlp

If you are installing from a CD please make sure that your CD is in the CD-ROM drive.

Caution: If you skip this file it may cause your Operting System to function imporperly

Press F3 to skip file
Press Esc to Quit setup

I'm going to skip it and see what it does......

If i have something wrong in my bios please tell me what it is....
