If you were going to a client to fix their computer, and all you could take with you was a usb stick with some programs, what are some essential apps that you would take with that would help you to diagnose as many possible issues as possible?
Not to spoil the joy and usefulness of Hirens but it is still not legal software. Does not help everyone has it
Check out WSCC http://www.kls-soft.com/freeware/wscc.php means you have direct link to all Sysinternals and Nirsofts stuff. Or you can use the tool to auto-update on usb stick. Very very neat. Can supplement even Hirens. Dont know DubCD.
Also a good idea to install portable version of Firefox with relevant diagnostic bookmarks, to site explaining Windows services, system error codes, virus encyclopedia - can end up with 20-25 in no time. Also to online av-scanners or direct executables like Dr. Webs Curit http://www.freedrweb.com/ - which is pretty good at cleaning up.
The UBCD should cover most if not all your diagnostic needs as far as software tools go. If its missing anything you can add to it while creating the bootable disk. You can even install it on a bootable thumb drive.
As mentioned above i also keep firefox and IE8 onhand. Its good to have have core temp or some other temp monitoring software onhand. I have a copy of registry menchanic as well as CPU-Z and GPU-Z just in case.
