ETA on Haswell-based Thinkpads (or similar products)

Hi everyone,

Here at work I have an aging Dell Latitude D830 with a 15" 1920x1200 panel and some flavour of Core 2 Duo CPU, plus a slightly newer Dell Latitude E5500 with a 15" 1440x900 panel and a bit better CPU than the D830. I'd like to replace both of them, as they're getting pretty old and cranky.

One of my coworkers recently picked up a Thinkpad W530 and I'm fairly impressed with it, but since Haswell has been announced I don't want to go out and buy what it essentially obsolete hardware (I'll likely be keeping the new machine for 3-5 years so there's no point to start off with something that's already been replaced!). Is there any news on when the Thinkpads will be updated with Haswell CPUs? Are there any products available that are comparable to a 15" Thinkpad that are available with Haswell?

My only major requirements for the machine are that it runs Windows, has a fairly powerful CPU, has at least 3 or 4 USB ports, and is in the 14-16" size class.

Thanks!

Good question. I just hope Lenovo upgrades the screen for the next revision. If they do then I'm getting one also.

The screen offers a choice of an HD+ or FHD screen with a resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels and In-Plane Switching (IPS). The IPS technology ensures that the screen is as viewable from different angles and it is from straight on. The display also comes with multi-touch to take advantage of the included Windows 8 OS.

Guess you're getting one then ^_^

I'd expect them past September. They've only released a handful of high-end Haswell parts so far, the rest are slated for a September-ish release. We should start seeing a lot more Haswell in a lot more varying levels of hardware after that.

Dell also launched (VERY quietly) their 7000-series Latitudes today, in 12-inch and 14-inch flavors. They aren't customizable yet, but I spoke to a rep today who said they got a notice from corporate that they'll be customizable within 48 hours.

12-inch:

14-inch:

They can be equipped with 1080p displays and up to Core i7's. Also of note, they both support the E-Port docks, which is awesome because USB docks pretty much suck.

Are there going to be home (non-business) equivalents?

Hmmmmmm. They look decent, but it's been a month and they don't allow any customization beyond adding a backlit keyboard.

Thanks for pointing them out, though.

The only thing haswell has to offer vs ivy bridge is improved battery life. If your machine is going to spend most of its time plugged in then it isnt worth the money. For the same price as a haswell notebook, you can get an ivb notebook with a much better screen and an SSD (or larger SSD).

Haswell also offers a nice boost to intergrated graphics performance which in my view is more critical than battery life especially with business notebooks where we don't always have the best GPU choices.

On a minor note, one other new feature on Haswell is NFC capability. At least that's what I read about the XPS 12 and T440s.

Too bad they don't have displayport. I might have to get a mac so I can use a new monitor.

Where do you see that?

some of them...

the x240 doesn't seem to have any (mini)DP (only HDMI and VGA)... VGA still makes sense for a business machine, would rather have seen (mini)DP, but I guess they were targeting business + HDMI at home?

the T440s has mini DP
