Ethereum GPU mining?

Has anyone here looked into mining Ethereum via GPU? It seems to be picking up steam these past 8 weeks ($1/coin to almost $6/coin today). The network hashrate has not followed the same uplift and current mining rate on an R9 280x would net more than $100/month in coins. I know mining cryptocurrency saw it's bust 1.5 years ago... but this one doesn't seem to be mineable by anything other than GPUs at the moment. It seems best suited to AMD GPUs, although NVIDIA looks to be profitable also(60% as good).

Perhaps mining Etereum is a good way to make some coin (if you have cheap power) and save up for a 2016 16/14nm GPU?

Polaris will likely be a monster at mining this, hope miners (& them thieving conniving retailers) don't push the prices of Arctic Islands through the roof again

I followed a mining guide a week or two ago, and after mining for a day discovered that I was mining on a "private node" and effectively wasn't mining anything (pretty sure I started mining before the blockchain was properly sync'd). Gonna try to get it going again following this guide. Any decent pools out there?

Also wondering if this price keeps up for awhile, if this is going to cause another spike in AMD GPU demand like the the bitcoin/litecoin mining craze in 2013.

I can't seem to get the blockchain to download through command prompt. Any idea what the issue might be or an alternative blockchain download source?

I have noticed that Ethereum has gone way up in value and market cap recently. May have to get in on it. Good news also is I noticed that x13 Boostcoin has gone up in value, and I was still holding onto them

I just started using http://eth.nanopool.org/ and it seems pretty straight forward. I was doing solo mine for a past few days, however I don't feel like waiting 7-10 days between payouts.

Been mining for a few months (since shortly after Frontier release) and following Ethereum's progress since Vitalik Buterin et al announced it (2014/2015). I bought some Ether in the presale but I forgot to download the wallet and couldn't recover it. Luckily it was only about $40 in Ether (but it would be over $200 now).

Currently mining at about 12 MH/s on a HD 7870 and 8 MH/s on a GTX 970. Probably possible to squeeze more performance out of both with some tweaking of the mining settings and the core/memory clocks of the cards, but I haven't bothered since I first set them up. Been using Ethereumpool.com for a while for pooled mining without issue.

The smart contracts system of Ethereum intrigues me, not just the mining aspect... which will end, by the way, once Ethereum switches over from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake (with Serenity phase, if I'm not mistaken) in a few months. There are a lot of upcoming cool uses for and apps built on Ethereum, including Augur (a predictions market), election transparency, IoT devices, and ledgers for big banks. Ethereum *should* scale better than Bitcoin, as well, and I think in testing and currently it handles more transactions per second than Bitcoin, though there will probably need to be increases in block size and other changes in the future the Ethereum network grows a lot more.

Ethereum is a bit complicated to understand at first with all the terms like gas, uncles, and different units and stages - even for someone familiar with other cryptocurrencies and the basics of how a/the blockchain works - so I'm still learning about it all. I don't know much in the way of programming or I'd be tempted to create an Ethereum-based app. I should learn to code...

However, I am unable to get everything working correctly. Whenever I try to install Ethereum.exe, it will finish installing but is nowhere to be found on my PC. When I try the seconds guide's method and download the blockchain through command prompt, I can't get it to actually start downloading anything.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing my issues?

Try getting the Mist wallet (a GUI version of the Ethereum wallet) and to mine follow the instructions on a pool miner website like Ethereumpool.co . It should be easier to set up that way.

At least only for a few months. After that when it's PoS no one is going to be mining it or using more power to run the wallet than they would be to browse the internet. The difficulty might make it impractical to mine (for most users) even before then.

Sample instruction if using eth.nanopool.org

1. Download & Install Ethereum-win64-latest.exe from

2. Download & Install mist wallet from
   [url]https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releases/download/0.3.9/Ethereum-Wallet-win64-0-3-9.zip[/url]
3. Create a wallet in Mist and copy the address (long string starting with 0x)
4. Open a command prompt with administrator privileges
5. cd "c:\Program Files\Ethereum 0.9.41\Release"
6. run following, replacing [B]address [/B]with your hexidecimal address from mist.
   ethminer.exe -F [url]http://eth1.nanopool.org:8888/address/miner1[/url] -G

You can then see your status at http://eth.nanopool.org by typing in your address into the search box.
