You said you sold Eth for BTC. BTC dropped from its peak near $20K, so relatively they are about the same. BTC dropped less recently because it did its plunging last month.

Well, so much for ETH $850 support....
.

It's back over $850 now. In the short term, looks like support is at around $870. Not sure if it'll hold.

Should probably look more towards Monero for Vega for profit.

Monero took a big hit too. My Vega FE is currently putting out ~$110/month mining ETH even at its reduced price; in contrast, the same card doing 1800 H/s mining Monero would only produce ~$62/month.

I wouldn't point any Vegas at XMR right now.

I traded ETH for BTC near ETHs peak, BTC lost a decent amount of value by then. I didn’t trade because of the price drops, I’ve always intended to swap it over; I’m just saying I’m glad I did when ETH was strong.

For folks mining in their homes, it’s a good way to get “free” heat during the winter. I don’t think there will be a sell off at all.

That's ... what I'm doing. Pure profit, well, after these semi-expensive cards get paid off. (Bought a couple this month, one using borrowed money. I just want to at least pay that one off this month.)

Yep the heat is a nice bonus. That's why I wanted to build 1 or 2 6-card rigs. I need to build the hvac system for my server room though. Right now the heat would just kind of sit in the hot aisle. It's still technically going to blend in with rest of house passively though.

Is it just me or are regular computer parts even starting to be scarce? I'm seeing a lot of "limit 2 per customer" on parts like ram and SSDs. I put together a rig from work the other day and emailed the product numbers to myself at home so I can do the order (didn't have password at work), and just now half of the parts are out of stock and I had to pick others.

I was going to wait till I build my case and to see how the VGA shortage works out before I build a rig, but think I'm going to pull the trigger on parts while I still can... I might build two since going AMD route I can manage about $700 for a rig not counting VGAs. Going with single stick of 8GB of ram and a mobo that has 4 slots, so that way I can always upgrade and turn it into a VM host or something.

Gotcha.

I hope this crash causes people to panic sell their GPUs haha.

I check Whattomine stats regularly, and sometimes, there's an opposite relation between difficulty and Eth profits. Eth revenue goes down, difficulty goes up for a bit. It may be that there's just a delay between the two.

I think the prices have to go to $500 level for the difficulty level to stop increasing.

I've been mining Eth even when XMR was ahead by some at any one instant because I think Ethereum has the brightest future of all coins out there minus Bitcoin itself. I'd rather stockpile and hodl ethereum in hopes of a bigger runup in time than XMR will get. Though I think XMR is a very promising coin in and of itself.

I'm been curious about mining and wanted to get my feet wet just to see what the fuss is about. I have an i7 desktop with RX 480 8GB card (also I can switch out to a GTX 1060 6GB card). My question is which card is better at mining, the RX 480 or GTX 1060? and which currency do you suggest I start mining right now? Thanks.

Try running NiceHash and it will tell you. Not sure if you can mine with both graphics cards at the same time, since you have two different card from two different manufacturer. If your PC has 2 PCIe slots, you may just want to plug both graphics card in and run both versions of NiceHash and see what happens (they have separate version for AMD and NVidia).

I am having problems with nicehash. When I register, I'm not receiving the confirmation email so I can't register... I am new to mining and stuff... >_<
I have a 1080 and i7 6700k how much should I be earning?

I don't think NiceHash requires registration. All you need is a bitcoin address. It seemed straight forward when I checked it out. I'm currently not mining so I can't tell you the details.

I think you do need to register because I cannot do anything at the moment.

Also thank you for the link. Do you know what is the average /kWh in the UK? I have no idea.
How do you check this exactly how much electricity I'm using on my PC?

EDIT - FINALLY EMAIL CONFIRMATION WOOP WOOP!

What exactly do I need to do now? Do I need to download a program or some sort? I am confused.
Again this is my first time doing nerdy stuff like mining

Yeah, screw it. I already have a nice video card and my office is cold. I might as well mine some Ethereum until summer comes or the price tanks.

We can't tell you this. Only you will know based on your location and how much your electric provider charges.

I use some dinky Belkin power meters to monitor electrical usage. If you find your billing rate for electricity you can also calculate annual usage with it.

Somewhat related though, be sure to check your power cords folks, a while back I had a “faulty” (probably just cheap) cord melt by the plug end.
Also be very careful not to overload the circuit your miners are on.

Is this advice for the hardcore miners only? I don't need to worry about overloading the circuit if I'm only mining on a single video card right?

Yeah you should be fine with just a single card mining. I guess it's always a good idea to check your power cable though even if you're not mining. A bad PS cable could wreck havoc on even the simplest of systems.

Yoiu know, not all PSU AC power cables are built the same. I mean, they're basically the same, but some are built for 120V AC @ 3A, 5A, 10A, 15A, etc. If you're drawing too much current, through your AC cable, you can melt it. That's why Antec 750W PSUs include a 10A PSU power cord, that's rather thick.

If you bought a decent PSU, and you're using the included cable (rather than any old PSU cable that you had laying around), then you're probably OK.

Some time ago, I bought some specifically UL-listed, 120V 15A AC power cables, from MonoPrice, for like $1.50-$2 per cable shipped. They may be more now. But for peace of mind, you might want to consider getting / using something like that.

Yeah, it took some time for my E-mail confirmation to NiceHash to arrive as well... like a few hours.

You should "activate" your account, or however they do it. Then login to it. Then it will show your mining / deposit "wallet address". It will be a long string of characters.

You need to copy and paste that to a text file on your PC.

Then, download NiceHash Miner from their site. Choose AMD or NVidia, in your case, NVidia I think.

Once you get that installed (you will need to do a CAPTCHA, and agree to several EULA-type things), then you can go to where it says "wallet address", and copy the address from the text file, and then paste it in. (I had to use keyboard, CTRL-V, to paste, as it disables Mouse-based Paste.)

Then, select your closest server, and a "worker name" (helps to identify different PCs mining to that same wallet address).

Then click Benchmark, and it will take like 30 minutes (or less) to run through all of the various algorithms that NiceHash can do (including their 3rd-party miners).

Once that is done, click "Start", and it should start mining. Once things appear to be working, click Stop, Exit the program, and reboot your PC.

Then, double-click on the NiceHash program after booting back up, and click Start. Enjoy!

Note, that you might want to use a 3rd-party utility, to change your GPU's voltage and power limits downwards, to prevent crashing at stock "gaming" settings. (Mining is VERY intensive, and can crash otherwise-stable PCs and GPUs.)

Why you guys using Nicehash to mine eth? Didn't they just get hacked and loose all their members money? Like all of their members money I mean ALL of it as in not a cent left.

I don't necessarily recommend Nicehash but you shouldn't be trusting any pool to hold your funds. So long as you are withdrawing regularly (ideally to a paper wallet and not an exchange for same reason) - and the minimum is low with no fees if you have Coinbase - it's no worse than any other big pool as far as risk.

They have two factor authentication and presumably implemented other security measures on the backend (one hopes, but don't rely on it) after the hack, so in some ways they are more likely to be secure than random x or y pool. It's better to avoid large pools altogether, but Nicehash what I recommend to new miners as it's less intimidating to set up. It's good for initial benchmarking, background mining, and automatic switching if you just want to get paid out in Bitcoin.

I usually only run it for testing purposes, though. I like to mine my favorite cryptocurrencies through various pools, otherwise.

1000W+ power supplies are probably the biggest hit after GPUs. You can find some under $200, but all the quality units from brands like Seasonic are overpriced or out of stock.
