I'm surprised Afterburner and TRIXX aren't updated to support the 480. Get on it MSI + Sapphire!

Test a bit more, decided to just stick an old monitor on the ref 480.

Z87-plus + g3220, EVGA 850GQ, measure using Kill-A-Watt.

1 x RX480 idle: 45W after driver 16.7.1
1 x RX480 Claymore Eth only: 950/2250, 900mv, 165W, 25.2MH/s

1 x RX480 Claymore Eth only: 1100/2250, 1000mv, 185W, 27.5MH/s

1 x RX480 Claymore 3DMark Firestrike Combined: 1125/2250, 950mv, vary from 165-190W

1 x RX480 Claymore Eth only: 1125/2250, 1000mv, 182W, 27.8MH/s

1 x RX480 Claymore Eth only: 1200/2250, 1050mv, 198W, 27.8MH/s

It looks like WattMan may be limiting undervolt setting depend on clockspeed as I am not able to hit 950mv at 1125MHz while mining but fine at idle. It vboost instead of vdrop.

I think 1125/2250 should be maxing out this card at 27.8MH/s.

Yeah, I got mine on Thursday I believe. I just have it tucked in a system now for some basic testing, but the thing hashes remarkably well at low clocks. I'm probably going to try the 4GB BIOS since it allows lower memory clocks, but I'm getting 23.2MH/s at 900MHz (850mV) and 2GHz mem clock. No power measurements until tomorrow probably, but it must be sipping power; it's running at 1450RPM and 68C in a case with that load.

That's great. It's all about the Mh/W once you get into these longer term mining stints. I was angry about how long my card is taking to arrive so I managed to get my shipping cost waved

Given everything I've read so far, the stock blower appears just fine for mining. I doubt aftermarket cards will perform much better. Or if they do it'll be at the expense of more energy.

Strange, when I tried to download the claymore miner from nanopool chrome blocked it as malicious.

Is claymore really that much better than ethminer?

OK I am trying to use Claymore but keep seeing
"ETH: Job timeout, disconnect, retry in 20 sec..." anyone encounter this before?

Question: when running Claymore on the 480, are you using any files from older driver revisions, or are you using the new 16.7.1 straight-up?

I don't get this. Driver versions never made any difference for me. 15.12/15.7, 16.5.2, 16.6.2, Windows 7 64-bit.

That applies for both my 280X and 290X. Are you guys going by ethminer/claymore reported hashrates, or actual hash rates based on pool or revenue from solo mining?

It's a fresh 16.7.1 install after Win10 installation, has Intel Graphic driver installed before RX480, no modification to 16.7.1 files.

I reported the sent rate, whatever is reported on the console or DwarfPool Sent Hashrate(MHs) column.

The actual hash rate depend on luck and vary too much.

Reported hashrates from ethminer, Genoil ethminer, and Claymore. When your own computer is telling you that your hashrate is 80% of what it was with an old driver build, you don't let it run for a week or two to see how it affects earnings. Well, I don't anyway.

It seems like Claymore is the only miner right now that handles the 480 properly. Not that I've tried it myself.

I tried, OpenCL errors out without finding any devices on old drivers. Recent AMD drivers reverted the code path for Eth mining anyways even prior to the 16.6.* and 16.7.1 drivers. I haven't needed the 15.** drivers for a few months.

100% 16.7.1

100% Eth

I set fans temps and power limit nothing else for 2 cards.

I read 24.45 + 24.8 = 49.25 software but at pool I get 48.7

this card is using 4 extra watts to drive the display

I flux on power 297 to 312

if I want lower I can do 23 + 23 = 46

and get 273 watts just drop the power limit to 29 or 30%

fan setting + temp setting keep the same

To recap

just use power setting from -15% to -30%

gpu volts leave stock

memory volts leave stock

this is a simple setup and I will have 5-7 pcs with 16 cards so simple works for me

Better under clock is possible I did do 270 watts at 46mh
over clock I did do 360 watts at 54mh

but the 297-312 watts with a flux reading at 48.5 to 49.25 mh is a simple setting on wattman.

Me like simple.

So now that the 480's have been out a week or so what's everyone's mining impression of it so far?

Solid little cards. Better reference cards for mining than the 290s. When they are easy to get they will completely screw up the difficulty curve.

I took one look at decred's difficulty curve and value, matched that up against the extra heat caused from mining it via Claymore, and said "blech".

I've decided to lay off the DCR for now, but for reference my temps were:

Eth-only (GPU/VRM1/VRM2): 58/65/64 -100mv and 0 Aux voltage
Eth+DCR: 62/79/66

I still am not able to lower core/memory clocks below stock frequencies.

going with eth + sia with claymore my card temps did rise by about 4-5C. but the fans kicked up a bit too.

with my 380/390 open air rig in the basement power went from 440 to 540 watts.

so when sia difficulty adjust it wont be long till i go back to eth only.

the dual mining aspect is nice till the second coin difficulty ramps up. might as well get some while the profits are there. might not last long.

Undervolted to 900mv and underclocked to 1ghz. memory @ 2000mhz. Core pulling 80w and fan speed only 36% and quiet to keep the card at 79C. Can't even hear it over my test bench fan. Much easier to deal with then the 290 reference cards. Getting 25MH out of it at those settings. I was able to snag a 4Gb on launch day so Im pretty happy with the results.

Thanks for the Rx480 responses. Hopefully availability will pick up so I can start replacing my 2/390's.

The 80w you cite, is that with GPU-Z?

I'm still trying get get an accurate picture of total power consumption (including board) for a 480 mining at 25Mh.

Agreed - where I had to fuss with my 390s these just chug along. Undervolted they perform well and stay nice and cool.

My 4GB 480 flashed to 8GB gets about 24.7 in Claymore. I need to find a guide on Wattman or something. Everything I do in there hurts my hashrate.
