Do I have to have my wallet running the same time as my miner?

No. You only need to open your wallet to send, or to update the block chain. (though if you dont update for while, it can take a long time to update)

NVIDIA needed a massive OC and a die shrink to manage to reach the mining that a 28nm chip could do... seems that something is off, no?

Many years ago, guys with lots of money and in suits gathered together and decided they will give mining advantage to AMD and gaming advantage to Nvidia.

So I moved one of my 380's out to an old test board I have laying around to mess with, and I've had some pretty good results with underclocking the core. I can go down to 850 MHz without having a noticable effect on hashrates. At 850MHz/1500MHz/-50mV I get ~21.3MH/s, and GPU-Z shows 53.5A for 48.5W on VDDC @ 0.9V. The card's just plugged into the slot so I don't have a whole card power measurement, but it seems to be pretty efficient at this speed at its only drawing ~200W on a pretty inefficient platform (Phenom II X3 and a Bronze CX430 PSU).
I might try to go higher on the memory later, but memory overclocking can be kind of a PITA as I find it's pretty prone to getting blue screens rather than driver restarts.

Rise!! Riiiise!!

That is what will happen to the difficulty for sure. I am trying to plan how to add a few more cards the next couple of months to not lose my current rate.

Better see if Newegg will sell my another 5pack of 290s.

When the refurb 290s went back on there I did think of you lol. I can't wait for Polaris 10 myself, going to redo my setup so I can have a gaming machine again.

Yeah I'm gonna see how P10 pans out to even think of adding more hashrate. If at least 30MHs is not possible with P10 I'm not gonna bother.

I plan to buy one no matter what because I want to game (in my living room where the TV is) but the 390X just dumps too much heat in the room to let it be dual-purpose 24/7. My plan is to get the P10 just for gaming and livingroom mining and let the 390x just mine in another room. What is funny is the 390x is the most expensive GPU I ever have owned and it's played a grand total of three games because right after I got it I got into mining.

Got my 290s yesterday, I was wondering if 30-31MH is good for them?

Yes that is very good.

Glad to hear that. I installed the 16.6.1 hotfix drivers and was only getting 20MH at first, so I tried the 15.12 drivers and jumped to 25MH. After that tried changing some of the OCL setting and finally got them to that 30-31MH range.

Is 19MH ok for a 7970ghz? Seem like that is as fast as I can get that to go.

Will say the heat that the 290s are putting out is pretty crazy.

I am getting 31MHs out of my 290s at 1100/1250 clocks. I am actually using the 16.6.1 driver, using the Claymore miner mentioned in this thread.

I'll probably wait and see with Polaris, but if it's ~30MH/s or so I might replace all of my current cards, while if it's 20MH/s or so I'd just replace my Tahiti and Tonga ones.

I'm really thinking of redoing my my gaming computer with GP102 (if and when it comes out) just so that in the evenings when I'm borderline on playing an hour of FO4 or not I'll say yes instead of just going to bed so I don't have to stop my 390s from mining.

For the Canadians out there, at the current Bitstamp price of US$768.00 we're essentially at CDN$1000 (CDN$995.70 to be precise). The Bitcoin ATH was 13 November 2013 at US$1216.73, but the equivalent Bitcoin price was CDN$1271.57 due to the stronger dollar at the time. If the current bull run continues, we only need to hit US$980 to reach the Canadian ATH.

Good point! I never thought of that.

FYI I'm done with 28nm, I'm tapping out, too much heat!

Hopefully cheap Polaris can replace some of my miners but the fight against the difficulty curve and with PoS coming late 2016/early 2017 this game will be over pretty soon.

If anything Polaris being good at mining will make things worse as it will raise the difficulty curve.

Another good point. Yes it'll likely increase the demand and cost of cards but allow for a wider audience that currently pay high hydro costs to get involved. One thing is certain, AMD will not be able to make enough of them if they mine well

I still have my doubts of them hitting anything higher than 25Mh. I guess we'll know soon enough.

If I keep going I might actually have to get stuff set up properly again, but I still have some room to grow. I still have a half dozen of these guys that I bought off eBay for $50 each sitting on a shelf unused, and it seems a shame to let them go to waste if there's still profit to be made out there.

Edit: And what was waiting in the mailbox when I got home? It must be providence.

Watch your VRM temps, and also consider bringing clocks down to 900 MHz where I find it's possible to bring power output to a mere ~150W depending on the card. My MSI 390 can almost go below that (though it varies with the mining software). If things are getting hot, that may be a suitable compromise.
