ethernet outlet not working?

I have a scientific atlanta cable modem, and I notice that when I connect the modem and my desktop together using an ethernet cable, my internet does not work. when I connect them via USB, then it is fine.

Initially, I thought it might the modem not working fine, but I just tried to connect the modem and my laptop with ethernet and the internet works perfectly.

Is the ethernet jack not working on my desktop? I want to connect my wireless router to my computer, and there is no USB port on the router, so how would I fix this??

I need a little more info.

What does it do when you connect the the desktop and the modem? Are you getting a limited connectivity info in the bottom? Also are you sure the cable works?

It could be that the network card is disabled in software, has an incorrect static ip/dns/gateway etc or that you have a poorly configured firewall. Check those and see if it makes a difference

Are you using a Crossover or Straight through cable?

I'm using a straight through cat5 cable. It shouldn't be the cable itself because when I use the same cable to connect my laptop and the modem together, everything works fine. It's just when I connect my desktop and the modem with the ethernet, there is no internet.

Many laptops ethernet ports will auto-MDIX, eventhough they may be only 100 BT connections. This would mean they will connect to the cable modem even with a straight cable. The desktop ethernet port may require a crossover cable.

Try using the same cable to connect the laptop and the desktop together. If the ethernet connects the chances are that the desktop requires a crossover cable. If the ethernet link does not show as connected then the chances are the ethernet port on the desktop machine is broken

You would do better to get a cheap router and connect the cable modem to that, and then connect you laptop and desktop to the router. Both machines will be much more secure behind the router. You should be able to use straight cables for all the connections. Having your desktop or laptop connected straight to the modem is not a good idea.

A quick note...if you originally hooked the modem to the laptop ethernet port then unplugged that and went from modem to desktop ethernet, it might not work because the router/ISP is still trying to hook up to the MAC address of the laptop NIC. Try plugging the ethernet from modem to desktop, unplug the modem, wait about 10 seconds or so, turn the modem back on, then wait for a minute or two to see if the modem will now sync up with the desktop.

Also did you try power cycling the cable modem when you plugged in the desktop? Lots of cable modem remember who connected to them last and don't like it when something else connects.

Try powering off and unplugging the cable modem from the power. Let it sit for 30 seconds and then plug it back in. Then boot up the desktop connected via the Ethernet cable and see what you get.

Do you get an IP address or anything?

Oh, heh. Just saw that's what TexDotCom said too.

Could also throw a router in between the cable modem and the PCs and then you won't have to worry about that any more.
