ethernet packet sniffer?

just for fun, i'd like to get something that would let me monitor unsolicited traffic coming to me and be able to crack the packets to see what's in 'em. anything like this out there?

use ethereal its a kick A&* packet sniffer.

btw they are called PACKET SNIFFERS>

Unless you're on an 802.11 network, however, you're not likely to see much "unsolicited" traffic these days... Damned ethernet switches!

If you're feeling adventuresome, Google for a while and see if you can come up with some ways to fool the switch into repeater "broadcast" mode.

You'll have fun, fun, fun till the sysadmin takes your T-bird away!

And by turning that switch into a hub you cause lots of problems. Dont do it. pr0n passwords and the feeling of thinking you are 31337 isnt worth it. Setup snort and see what people are trying to do to you, its much more fun
