Hello all. I recently moved into an apartment that provides Internet. Really really slow internet. After much complaining the manager got a new service for our apartment and tied it into the hub area in the main building and ran the new service through the existing cat5 line for our apartment. He stopped over and plugged his laptop in and ran a speed test that showed around 60 Mbps. Great! Problem solved! However, when I plug my laptop or more importantly, router into the same line I get nothing. I show that I'm connected but I have zero internet. What gives? I've tried installing drivers for the Ethernet adapter and have tried to power cycle the router with the Ethernet attached and unattached and still have no internet yet today the manager came over again and plugged right in and had internet. Help please! I have a MacBook Pro retina laptop with an insignia usb3 to Ethernet and a netgear wndr3400v2 router. Your help is greatly appreciated.

What is this "hub" area?

Sounds like you are trying to connect directly to the modem and it's locked to the MAC address of the managers laptop. Usually when you plug a new device into a modem you have to power cycle it, or most routers can spoof a MAC address.

When you plug it in, do you get a link/act light? If not, my first suspicion would be that a small furry creature had its way with the wiring at just the right time.

If you do get a link light, but are getting a self-assigned IP, my first bet would be that you need to have your hardware address (MAC address, "Media Access Control - has nothing to do with Apple hardware) added to a whitelist by the network administrator. Best to just add your router's WAN MAC to their whitelist - anything behind your router will be hidden from them anyway.

So is the manager coming to your apartment to check the internet, or just to your building? What exactly is he plugging into when he comes by (a port, a switch, a hub?)
