I messed up how? My paypal verified address was correct. The address money came from, and shipping address, were correct. My e-bay home address had my old unit number. Mwave messed up as far as shipping, in my opinion. If someone sends you paypal, you send only to the verified address on the paypal invoice, do you not?

Time to have a torture porn package "accidentally" delivered to her. When you show up to claim the torture porn the awkwardness she'll feel handing back the previously opened package will be priceless...

I would have delivered the mail to the correct address myself (have had to that plenty of times in my old apt. complex).

I would've handled the lying neighbor the same as you did. It's not my job to give her an ethics lesson and getting in an argument is a good way to ensure any misdirected mail doesn't get to you in the future. Make a mental note and move on.

your neighbor is a lying asshole. also, isnt opening someone else's mail a crime?

Yup, federal offense.

Nope. It was sent UPS.

It's only if it was using the postal service that that applies.

Nope. The U.S. Code includes language covering private carriers as well.

TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 63 > CHAPTER 63?MAIL FRAUD

§ 1341. Frauds and swindles

Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, or for obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises, or to sell, dispose of, loan, exchange, alter, give away, distribute, supply, or furnish or procure for unlawful use any counterfeit or spurious coin, obligation, security, or other article, or anything represented to be or intimated or held out to be such counterfeit or spurious article, for the purpose of executing such scheme or artifice or attempting so to do, places in any post office or authorized depository for mail matter, any matter or thing whatever to be sent or delivered by the Postal Service, or deposits or causes to be deposited any matter or thing whatever to be sent or delivered by any private or commercial interstate carrier, or takes or receives therefrom, any such matter or thing, or knowingly causes to be delivered by mail or such carrier according to the direction thereon, or at the place at which it is directed to be delivered by the person to whom it is addressed, any such matter or thing, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both. Almost same thing happened to me but other way around.

Came home and found a FedEx Ground package lying at the door. I was expecting a package (albeit a much bigger package) during that week but not that day. So I just opened it without even looking at the label to see what it was. Turned out it was some medical supply for the neighbor across the street (we are in 356 XXXXX St, label was for 365 XXXXX St).

Well, walked over next morning and gave the package to the neighbor who was very happy. So yeah, I did open it (careless to not check the label) but it was returned to its original owner the following day. No, I did not return it the same day b/c I reached home at ~10pm in the night.

There is more to this than just opening someone's mail delivered to you.

That is utter BS! I would never, ever open a package that wasn't mine. If I had a package at my doorstep that I didn't order, I would be suspicious of it not excited to open it. Also, where the hell does your neighbor get off saying her daughter "thought she had a new PC"? Where does she think new PC's come from, a freaking geeked out fairy? WTF?

Edit: If it is the daughter that opened it, then shame on her. She should be raised to know you don't touch things that aren't yours. Whether it is you address or not, it wasn't to her.

Was the mother a MILF? If so, you might still be able to rescue this situation...

See, the difference between your situation and the OP's is that you made a mistake and then rectified it by doing the right thing. The mom in the OP's story, on the other hand, opened the package knowing that it wasn't hers and decided to play dumb and make it look like a mistake when she got busted.

Wasn't the mom just getting home from work? Did she use telekinesis to open the package?

That kid is being brought up well. Opening packages that aren't even theirs. I would have held on to the package for a day or two and wait for the person to come claim it if I didn't know where to find them and/or contact them. I would have then called UPS if I couldn't get a hold of the person and tell them.

I believe mandatory buttsecks in payment on the mothers behalf in this situation.

It's still mail theft. Report them to the police, tape the arrest and put it on youtube. I hate people who steal mail.

1) I would go out of my way to get the package to the rightful recipient.
2) Tell her you're gonna call the police, inform the HOA, and post flyers around the development about her mail theft crime. And use that to blackmail her into doing things she wouldn't normally do. Muahahhahaha.

Ps. Pics of the mail thieve?

Where does it say the mom was just getting home from work? The OP also said that the mom got red in the face and said "oh...blah blah blah" indicating that mom either opened the package herself or at least knew about it. In the case of the latter, she's just as guilty and may as well have opened the package.

If you're uncertain as to the ethical values of the mother, why not just test them? Send a package to yourself at their address. Stick a brick in it with a note that "It's a crime to open things addressed to other people." Include the specific language & a warning that the next time they do it, you'll report them & they will at the very least be fined. If they bring the package to you unopened, you win. If they open the package, you win. If they open the package and throw the brick through your car window...

but instead I saw the tenant just getting out of her car

while not stating she was getting home from work, regardless she was just getting back home to figure out the package. Where you attempted to troll though or just illiterate?

Queenrobot: if a package is delivered to your home (assuming there wasn't a name on it)...you don't owe anything to anyone...it's unsolicited. While unethical to keep, it's really not illegal.

It's pretty clear the daughter (however old she is) opened the package and perhaps thought it was a gift. The mom more or less was probably going to try to find out from relatives who may have sent it...or figure out if it did have a name.

I get a ton of stuff, I have opened items not realizing they were not for me. I usually know to go back to the box label once I see the contents are not something I was expecting and repack it as well as I can and call for a pickup.

That would be great and all, except for this from the OP:

She says, "Sorry about opening it. There was no name on it." Meanwhile I am looking right at my name on the address label.

The kid was careless and should not have opened it.
