Europe continues to amaze me: Now Belgium Wants to Put Ariel Sharon on trial

After sticking up for Saddam Hussein and going against American wishes to protect Turkey in the event of war, now they want to prosecute one of our strongest allies. The Belgium government wants to try Ariel Sharon for 'war crimes.' It seems like things haven't changed at all in Europe. First they ally themselves with Saddam, a man who publicly said he admired Hitler, now they want to punish Ariel Sharon for going after terrorists in Lebanon and blame him for actions that he never carried out. With anti-americanism and anti-semitism rife in that part of the world, I'm not sure which side these europeans are on in the war on terror.

Belgium's highest appeals court has ruled that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon could face war crimes charges, but only after he leaves office.

The court was responding to an appeal by a group of 23 Palestinian survivors of a massacre in Lebanon more than 20 years ago, when Mr Sharon was Israel's defence chief.

The killings in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps were carried out by Lebanese Christian militia allied to Israel, which then occupied southern Lebanon.

Israel withdrew its ambassador to Belgium "for consultations" in response to the court ruling.

The suit was brought under Belgium's 1993 "universal jurisdiction" law, which allows for the prosecution of alleged war crimes no matter where they took place.

Last summer a lower court ruled that Mr Sharon could not be tried under the law because he was not in Belgium, but the government has since moved to amend the legislation.

The change, which allows for prosecution even if the defendant is not in the country, is expected to be passed this spring.

Indirect responsibility

Mr Sharon was Israel's defence minister at the time of the killings at Sabra and Shatila in 1982.

An Israeli investigation found Mr Sharon indirectly responsible for failing to prevent the killings of between 800 and 2,000 refugees.

Mr Sharon was forced to resign from government but never faced charges over the incident.

In the run-up to the 2001 Israeli elections, he expressed regret about the "terrible tragedy" at the refugee camps - but rejected any responsibility.

Besides Mr Sharon, war crimes proceedings have been brought in Belgium against a number of world figures.

These include Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Cuban President Fidel Castro, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo.

But those trials were suspended in June, after the Brussels appeals court ruling.

So far, the only people tried under Belgium's controversial war crimes law are four Rwandans sentenced in 2001 for their role in the 1994 genocide of the country's Tutsi ethnic minority.

wtf is up with this war crimes court? the reason it was set up was so that all germany would be absolved by putting a few leaders on a show trial. people are taking that court too seriously.

I never knew that Belgians had such a great sense of humor. All they need now is a straight man.

The French, Germans and belgiums (or whatever they call themselves) need to be kicked out of NATO.

Who needs them anyway.
I don't think war is the right thing to do but you dont turn your back on an ally.

Wake up and smell the coffie, you are not a superpower!

If what they say about Ariel Sharon is true than he needs to be punished.
But I dont see it happing.

peace

Ariel Sharon should be prosecuted and tried for all his war crimes. The man has a violent past and even though palestinians and israelis had a turbulent past, the latest fights broke out only because of him a few years ago.
I applaud Belgium for coming forward with this.

What's he doing that's good? Defending his people? Ummm... no. Trying to find a resolution? Ummm... no.

It's amazing that people in the 20th century can still worship and follow "war heros". I'm sure you hate Bush, he was AWOL for 6 months.

If you are referring to his visiting the temple wall, or whatever it is called, I have to laugh. Civilized people do not respond to a man praying at a wall by blowing themselves up in crowded civilian areas. It's no crime to visit a holy shrine, but it is wrong to respond to that with violence.

gimme a break man, what do you mean by that? Turn their back? It's not like the US are being invaded right now by the Iraqies, the US government are launching an offensive against them if you haven't noticed (or trying to).

Just because you are subjects of war propaganda doesn't mean that the French, Germans and Belgees (heh.. or whatever)are. Maybe they can't support your war-is-the-only-option ideas? Maybe they don't want to start a war just because the US try to tell them to?

That's probably the thing really. The US government sees only the option of war. Other governments don't, they think they can via the UN do things differently. Hence, they don't want to go to war just because someone tells them to. Of course, had you been under attack it would have been different but that is a totally different matter.

But, I live in a neutral country and we are only members of the UN hence I can only stand aside and see things objectively, there are always two sides of a conflict, unwilling as you might be of seeing the other side.

Like you said, peace

yes he was trying to defend his people. but a lot of determined terrorists can be very pissy, and result in a lot of hatred towards certain govt officials. namely sharon. i think he's doing a good job, i would have done far more if i were him

who ever said i worship war heroes? i respect them, but not worship them. are you a damn peacenik, or just your average idiot who thinks the world is a nice happy place now, and we need never fight again? yes, war in my eyes is on occasion a beneficial thing.

when was bush awol? he was in the National Guard, can you blame him for not wanting to go to vietnam?

no, i wont fight a war i dont beleive in. but i will fight in a war if i have a vested personal interest. like not dying.

dude, america makes everything better. including chocolate. we also make it en masse!

nah, dont nuke em, that'd take a lot of money. lets just reinforce the allies that specifically back us, and widthdraw all aid and supplies from those that dont. lets see, that reduces the list to... 5, 10 maybe? but this 10 would kick the rest of the world's collective asses if need be. dont forget that, you world.
