"Rich European nations like Germany and France have been cracking down on immigration in reaction to concerns about joblessness, but many economists say western Europe needs precisely the opposite approach: Attracting foreign labor to offset a graying population."

if people in Europe would bother having kids, many of their problems would disappear.
they don`t want immigrants, they don`t want liberalization ,the US is the biggest threat to world peace while at the same time they enjoy american military protection etc.
nihilism ,especially in europe , will destroy the continent if things continue on the same path.

I am also guessing if they lift their ridiculous amounts of taxation and govt mingling in their markets, turn job creation over to the private sector, it may work out better for them.

They will require immigration, but right now even with a shrinking population their unemployment problems are high. There is a fault within the system.

It would be a step in the right direction, at least. Starting a business here in sweden, that fallows all the rules and regulations, is a painful process. A headache most people would rather avoid. I know I would, having attempted it.

Yeah, the problem(or at least part of it) is that they make it almost impossible to start small-medium sized, businesses. Businesses which sweden needs in order to create more jobs and fix its economy.

I'm not going to say that loose immigration rules aren't hurting European nations, but the ridiculous job contract laws in France should be their primary focus before all else. When you make employers slaves to the employees they do take on, it's no wonder that they're loathe to hire.

Their immigration has implications well beyond economics alone. They offset the demographics too, and not with people who like to integrate. France is an excellent example.
If Europe doesn't put an end to this hostile immigration and start taking care of business, it will continue rotting until the EU will fall apart.

Birth rates for the most part are proportional to the standard of living. Poor Europeans, due to their social infrastructure have less children; it's a choice and they shouldn't be criticized for this. All first world nations are having the same issue, except for the US where immigration is keeping the economy and wealth in a steady growth phase.

I agree, Europe needs to open their borders, and let this be a lesson to irrational protectionists in the US.

So if economic prosperity only comes from immigrants, will the world fall apart once everyone has migrated and has an aging population?

I didn't say that; there are many factors which determine economic prosperity.

In a mature economy like in the first world there is only so far you can go to improve efficiencies given limitations on commodity prices, population, and consumption. The key factor that separates the US from other nations around the world is their population growth. Compare population growth to economic growth in the first world nations and you will see this trend. Is it the only factor? Of course not...but accounts for the vast majority of economic growth. Another is wealth generation and borrowing against this capital...increasing consumption.

We need to lift our own ridiculous amount of taxation.

"For a year now, it has been harder to find employees in the information technology field, particularly highly qualified ones," Hubschneider said.

Bosses like Hubschneider are confronting a paradox: In a country with unemployment of over 10 percent, there is a deepening shortage of skilled workers in some industries.

What a bunch of BS. The same BS being spewed by Republicans and certain Canadians as well.

They just don't want to pay decent wages.

Poor babies not making the same profits as the U.S. using illegal workers.

Europeans can pick immigrants that don't want to blow up the host country or wrap their women in layers of clothings to sustain growth. Germany need engineers? Get the Chinese Engineers and not the radical Jihad Middle East Chemistry majors.

There are immigrants, and there are the ones that don't hate West. Pick those.
