I've looked at EVE several times over the past few years but never broke away from my WoW addiction long enough to give it a fair shot. Now that I'm completely over WoW I'm going to try the EVE trial. Can anyone give me some racial advice?
I understand they are the same, but the ships seem to build off prior racial skills and there are factions. If you are just starting out and plan on staying with one race's ships for awhile and want to focus on PVP, is one better than another?
<edit> whoohoo, 5th post in 8 years, I'm moving up in the world!

I wonder if we will get 3 nights in a row where someone finds a plex, we probe them out and then kill them in the plex and then run it ....

Also salvaging is great. Don't run for CN if you want a better LP to isk ratio. Missions are proven better than 0.0, the only good thing about 0.0 is officers and faction rats. Also, remember your social skills that boost mission LP and reward. It matters. People make tons of isk running missions, just gotta do it right. And that does mean paying attention.
As someone who has done both missions and now lives in 0.0, your statement isn't exactly true. If your ratting in Great Wildlands or Syndicate or Geminate, your not going to make much per hour because the system sec status is low. Now if you can rat in Venal, then you can make a lot of isk due to broke NPC pirate tru-sec.
Plexing though is even more profitable. I made 15b+ on plexes in Venal and this was doing mostly 6/10 or 8/10s.
And how hot is venal? what if people come in? It takes away too much time. So much more volatile.
Plexes ARE where it's at though. It's what I do. Comparing only missions and 0.0 ratting, I've got to say that missions are way better.

For Venal, it depends on two things. First do you have standings with the north (Razor/MM/TCD + minors). Second, where are you going to be plexing. I did most of my plexing within 5 jumps of PF-QHK. Additionally, I'm late PST player when most of the local hostiles are not awake.
If people came into local, I did one of a few things. If I was in the 2nd or 3rd room of a plex, then I pulled my drones in and just watched for probes. If they were scanning for me, then I just warped to a safe and cloaked up (nothing in plexes warp scrams). Most roaming gangs are looking for ratters. If they have a prober then its going to take them a minute or two minimum to scan you down in the plex. Even if they scan you down, when they warp to you they end up at the entrance so it takes time to actually get to you.
Mission wise, its actually possible to do missions for NPC factions while also doing plexes IF you run two accounts. Faction hits for killing NPC BSs is very minimal (about .01% iirc). Its killing structures that kills your faction (killing a missle tower is a 3.0% hit ot faction). Just make sure the mission character only kills ships.

Does anyone have a link to a good character creation guide? I did a google search, but everything I found seems a little out dated.
Thanks!

Anyone know what Apocrypha 1.5 is going to bring? I heard it will add some new Epic Arcs, but other than that, I don't know. Maybe we will get some more T3 ships? That would be cool, although I don't have the ISK or Skills to fly one.
New epic arcs have been added for each of the factions, offering challenging level four encounters and exciting new storylines.
Factional Warfare gets some upgrades! The variety of awards has been increased, including new unique rewards for PVP kills. Missing faction variants for several modules were added, as well. Be sure to check the LP store once 1.5 arrives!
Fuel Bays have been created, allowing you to expand the storage capacity on your black ops ships.
Multi-sized rigs are now available due to new advances in rig development technology. Small, medium and large versions offer a wide range of affordable and effective rigging solutions.
