To anyone still confused: Click HEREto positively identify if it is fluid or not

edit: I also have a maxtor drive from the same line..7200 D740X but it's the ball-bearing drive and with the two sitting side by side... i could DEFINATELY hear a difference. the ballbearing has a high-pitched screeching sound at idle while the fluid bearing is virtually silent

I'm as good at conjecture as the next guy, but was hoping that someone knows from experience... Does a Staples coupon that "Expires 6/14/02" expire at the start or end of 6/14? In other words, is this deal now dead, or does it have 24 hours still to run?

Thanks,

-jim.

I needed it to hook up my downstairs cable modem to the computer i brought back from school which is in my room. Is it possible to buy a cable that i could run outside along the siding into my room?

Most cable modem accounts only lease one IP address, so the above post is correct, you will likely need a router. Alternatively, if you hook up your "main" computer with a second NIC, you can have that computer function as a router. Microsoft's "Internet Connection Sharing" is one easy way to do this; AnalogX's "Proxy" is another.

As far as the cable goes, you can run regular Cat5 if you want, and as long as the shielding is going to hold up (won't be cut, or whatever), you'll be fine. Cat5 Ethernet is also known as UTP, aka "unshielded twisted pair." It can be a bit more difficult to find, but they do make STP = shielded twisted pair, which has a sturdier jacket. It won't work with the Netgear cards, but using 50 ohm coax would be best of all for running outdoors. Coax does limit you to 10 Mbps, btw.

Just went to the closest Staples to Charlotte 20 minutes away! and scored a BB drive, but no ATA133 card and they had 3 drives in stock all BB .....

When I lived in Tampa there was a staples on every corner, I bet they have the liquid bearing drives dripping off the shelf.....

I am on comcast and they do give out 2nd ips for 5.95 a month. I really would like a wireless solution but the are so expensive after getting the main unit and card. I was going to run the cat5 cable under the siding. I saw that Homedepot had cat5 cable for .13$/ft and it says for use indoor/outdoor. Maybe that stuff would work.
The only other alternative would be to go for a phoneline network(forget the name HP??) How are those? That would mean i would need a jack in my room

Can someone confirm for me that I got a fluid motor drive? On the sticker on the outside of the box, the info that is written sideways to the rest of it reads "LSL4", and "Kit: L01J080G". I ran the maxblast software, and in there it was identified as "6L080L4"

This deal is ok, but i wouldn't call it "HOT".

I simple search of sites like Pricewatch finds similar drives selling for $87 WITH SHIPPING.

By the time you buy the Maxtor drive ($70) + $10 of something else + TAXES + SHIPPING, I'm sure you're looking at far more than $87. Even if the $10 of something else is something you really, really need, TAXES + SHIPPING will probably be at least $10+ alone, so you're really only saving a few bucks, less than 10%.

10% off (less than $10, probably closer to $5) is not a HOT DEAL, least not to me.

Is the WD800JB ($120 shipped) a better drive (and deal) than this (whether ball-bearing or fluid)?

My emailed coupon expired yesterday also, but there are codes all over the place. Do Staples in-store take just the codes or do you need the coupons?

on pricewatch, most of those drives are prolly OEM... this is retail.. good if you need the adapter and cables.

but regardless.. for me, the deal has come out to 65 after all taxes and rebates. Mainly because staples could not get that switch to me. I am one willing to wait for the rebate... at least for staples, they seem to be really good w/ the rebates.

That special is over. I did order one yesterday so I got the $139.94 price(before $40 rebate). As I'm building an entirely new system fer myself, I went and trolled around the Staples website to see if there was anything else I'm looking for the new build. I discovered they've started carrying Antec power supplies. They had the new 330TruePower for $59.99, which beats CompUSA's sale price of $69.99. It also got me up to near thr $40 discount number of $200. I went to the weekly specials flyer and ordered a can of blowjob for $4.94, which is a dollar or two less than normal.
My after rebate and discount price on the two primary items(before 6% sales tax) is $120 and change. I LOVE Staples and those great rebates and discounts!

udonoogen: "stop selling them on ebay!!!!"

Why? The prices on ebay are ridiculous. Most of the deals on here are far better priced.

Notice how no one is bidding on them....

Anybody send in their rebate yet ? I just looked at the packing slip and the SKU number is 999815. If you search staples for this SKU it isn't even in their database. I then looked up my order at staples.com. The Item No. for the Maxtor HD is listed as IM1999815. This isn't in their database either.

The rebate form says the rebate is for "Model #L01J080G (SKU 471535)". The model number is correct but the receipt information doesn't show the correct SKU and in fact the numbers it shows don't even appear on Staples site. Seems like staples is playing games. If my rebate gets rejected for wrong SKU I will be pissed.

Others should check their's and monitor this one closely. If staples is starting to play games like this to avoid fulfilling rebates I think we should consider a lawsuite. OK, maybe a little pre-mature ... lets see if it goes thru.
