Although you should be able to tell whether it's a ball bearing or fluid mechanism drive from outside of the box (6L080J4 vs. 6L080L4), but the last one I bought turned out to be a ball bearing drive even though the outsided box indicates it's fluid. The new one I got today also says fluid, but I have yet confirmed it (still debating whether to keep it).

Where in the boxs you find this 6L080J4? I only see L01J080G in my box, comes with the card but i think is not the fluid one.
And where it says fluid outside the box?

I don't know about later Maxtor hardrives, but my ~2 year old 20gig Diamondmax 7200 rpm ata66 drive is one LOUD hardrive. The weird thing is, sometimes it's sorta tolerable, but other times (and constantly now for the past 4-5 weeks, now that I switched to a high-end p4 system) it makes this -excruciating- high-pitched whine... I can only think it compares with those banshee-like delta cpu fans... not to the same extent, but like it. I have a seagate barracuda type iv 80gb drive which is silent as my main drive, so luckily i don't have to hear the screaming maxtor unless i'm actually accessing it (though win2k likes to make it spin up every once in a while :/ )

I see the same on my box. I opened it and it has a model # (part #) of MX6L080L4. If you go to maxtor's site and look up D740X in the product finder it states

*Note"L" denotes Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motors

On their spec sheet for the drive it also states
** The letter "J" contained in the model number denotes that this drive was manufactured in Japan with Ball Bearing Motor.

This may not answer your exact question as to the data on the box itself but if you have the driver open it up.

Just grabbed a maxtor drive from ly local staples. Mine too has the ata133 card.
drive $139.94 + mint $0.50 - $30 coupon + $7.74 tax
well $118.38 - 40 rebate = $78.38.. not bad for such drive.. esp with the free ata133 card.

By the way, i verified the drive that i got is the one with Fluid dynamic motor (6L080L4) through the maxblast software

ok, this is awesome. I just did the math and it does come out to around $74.05 for me. Here is how.

Hard Drive $139.94
5 Port Switch $39.94
2 Ethernet cards 19.99 x 2 = $39.98

Total Amount Due = $219.86
Use $50 off $200 coupon
Get $60 rebate for Switch and 2 cards (means you pay $19.92 for the all three)
Get $40 rebate on Drive.

End up paying $69.86 + Tax. Since it is still over $50, you get free shipping.

As I need the switch, but not the cards, I will sell them for $15 each and get another $30 to help balance it out...not too bad, now I just hope they have them in stock.

The way you can check if it is ball bearing or fluid bearings is to check the model number that is listed sideways to all the other information on the spec label. If it says P6J6L4 then it is ball bearing. If it says P6L6L4 then it is fluid. This came up last month when Staples had the same HD on sale. Here is the old thread where this issue was discussed. The other model number (e.g. 6L080J4) can be misleading.

istvan, it's actually P6L6L4 or L6L4 on the outside sticker you shouldlook for. If it says J6L4, then it's a ball bearing drive made in Japan. I've edited my earlier post.

Thanks a lot guys (de8212, Lanyap, theshamu and I think I didn't miss anyone that replied to me) for answering my questions, is the first time for me that too many people answer my posts...ok here is the deal, you guys were right about the L6L4 code in the outside of the box, I wissh I knew that before...the one I've got with the ata133 card is a ball bearing for sure, now i went back and bought another one with no ata133 card and is the fluid one, i really want to reduce noise in my computer so i want it to check this out, tomorrow i will return the one with the ata133 card, i didn't open it. .. now I wonder if the guys that states that he bought the one with the ata133 card is really a fluid one, mine has a J in the model number, but the one without the card has an L... maybe the it doens't come with the card if it is a fluid bearing....

thanks again to everybody!!!!!!

enable your PrivateMessage function so that info can be relayed via PM ...you are going to have difficulties unless you already have a credit card and can order online

I jumped even though I got the 5400 80GB drive from Staples for $60 two weeks ago.
I needed envelopes and Sharpie's anyway and they both were on sale. That brought my
price over $150 so I could use the $30 off $150 coupon.
So it will be $122 + tax =$128.10 - $40 = $88.10
If you take $12.00 off for the envelopes and pens I needed anyway it's $76.10.
Not bad for an 80gb drive. Newegg has this drive for $110 + shipping of about $7.
So it's about $40 less then the best.

As for quiet I have 2 D740X drives now, both ball bearing, and they are really quiet compared to my old drive.
Storagereview.com says the fluid drives are a couple of db quieter, but in their opinion the sound of most
computers will drown out the difference anyway.

Let's hope I get the ata-133 card too. That would be a nice bonus, but I am not holding my breath.

you can get 2 (rebates..) only by having one "bought" by cash by a "friend" at another postal address. on the paying part after rebate(s) depends on your deal structuring ability.. istvan why are you wanting to give up an ATA100/66 80GB 7200rpm hard drive just for the the liquid bearing model and the performance is not really as all what it is cracked up to be( read here, here, quick Mac chart and the Promise ATA133 card ) and the PCI ATA133 card can easily be sold for $20 to $30 over in FS/FT forums here at AT or locally...lowering your cost on an 80GB 7200rpm harddrive to as low as $50 ....if it had not been for finances I would have bought the ATA133 carded 80GB 7.2k drive from the previous Staples deal as it is I got mine (still unopened "new style" packaging) last Fri and restructured on Sunday. Its up to you.

hey dude you are right abpout that, is not the fastest drive, the deal for me now is that i need a quiet drive, so I have 2 60 gigs already, maxtors, they are pretty quiet, those are 7200, but the 30 gigs 7200 and andother 60 gigs 5400 are so noisy, so trying the fluid one maybe be will help me.
thanks for the articles, i already read one of those but not the one in the QUE page.

Mine was a 6L080J4 (Kit L01J080G on the box) which is a non-liquid drive as noted by the "J". Oh well, still a hot deal for me.

[edit] Wondered why my total was off. It appears the staples goons charged tax on the amt listed before the coupon was deducted. I am not sure that's legal.

This is another Sweet AnandTech deal.

Like so many others, I did not need it, but it is so low
in Price, how can you pass it up ? !

I felt I might help a few others ........
The deal as posted IS correct. And the drive will net
out costing you approx. $70 on the nose.

In my case, (Zip Codes for Atlanta, GA), the Maxtor is showing
"out of stock." All I did, TODAY, Tuesday, was to get my ducks
in a row, and call Staples on the phone <1-800- 3STAPLES>

The young lady GLADLY backordered my Maxtor for me (it will
ship by Next Tuesday, she indicated), and a few reams of Xerox
Paper they now have on special (Item #386941 - $3.94 ea).

She also GLADLY took my $30 off $150 coupon code.
I found these Coupon Codes on 2 diff sites ....
Just go look using Google or what's on top of your shoulders.

My drive's Net Price will be the $69.94 after I receive my rebate.

So for those of you who want a Kick-Butt GREAT deal, JUMP on this.

And please do not be dissuaded by those who complain otherwise.

My case has five (5) Maxtor drives in it. I have used Maxtor successfully for more than 8 years now.
And my friends tell me no one is harder on hardware, especially hard drives than I am.

If you need some more storage space, it ain't been this cheap since
Sam's had the 100 GIG Western Dig -7200 RPM for $123 (Net after rebate
a month before Christmas.

And take a second to SMILE and Say Thanks to AnandTech for what they bring us !

Sounds good Mikey. I ended up inadvertently with an even lower price.

Sunday I ordered the HD, the Netgear switch/2 NIC combo with a $40 off coupon. This morning Staples CSR called and said the switch was no longer available and would not be shipped. I didn't really care, since I only added that part to get over $200 for the coupon. Asked her if they were going to take the coupon off and she assured me NOT, due to it was valid when I placed the order.

UPS brought the rest of the order about an hour later. Since I didn't get the switch, I couldn't use the $40 MIR on it and the NICs, and any NIC rebates alone had alread expired. Called CSR and explained it all. Young lady is sending UPS by to pick up NICs. She also assured me that the $40 coupon would still be accepted.

That means I got the HD for $139.94 - $40 coupon - $40 MIR, and with Virginia 4.5% sales tax, nets out to $64.43 including tax and delivered, when the dust settles.

Mine has a sticker on the outside that says Feed Your Need for Speed with ATA/133. The code on the sticker is J6LA (ball bearing?). So does this have the card or should the sticker say "Free Inside" if there's a card? I guess I'll go check the staples and get the one with the card.
