MX6L080J4 -- ball bearing
MX6L080L4 -- fluid motor.

Both have the "ATA133" sticker.

Some boxes (ones from a while back, when maxtor had a promotion) have a "FREE ATA/133 Card Inside" sticker. Happy hunting.

Got mined via mail order today; ball bearing motor; no IDE card, but for $70 net, I can't complain.

Has anyone filled out the rebate form yet? What's the UPC code for this product? on the side of my box i have what appears to be 2 UPC codes in the following configuration (5 390404 001013) and (7 51921 02669 2) I think its the tab that starts with the 7 but I just want to make sure before sending it in. Also, do I just need to cut the UPC code out or should I send in the entire sticker with kit information and s/n? Thanks

ok, potentially stupid question. got mine in the mail today on the side of the box it has
"KIT: L01J080G
S/N: 664208159494"

then on the side in text perpendicular to the other text is simply has "J6L4." can anyone tell which drive this is without opening the wrapper?

I have the same specs... from what I read in here it sounds like it s ball bearing... could be wrong though.... I wonder how much hassle it would be to exchange this at the bm and hunt for a liquid bearing unit?

I don't know if this is ALWAYS true, but I'll tell you that mine has the same Kit number and "J6L4" as yours (different S/N of course). Mine has a ball bearing motor.

I opened mine up and found it to be liquid bearing (see above post). My kit is the same # and obviously my s/n is different but most significantly, the other 4 characters are L6L4 as opposed to your J6L4.

i think L01J080G, means it is a liquid bearing drive, since it start with L..

edit:

oh btw , check rite next to the bar code see if it says P6L6L4, if it does
then it is the jack pot ~

darn ... i bought the same drive for 110 2 month ago..... sigh ..

where does one find the P6L6L4? The only thing I find near the barcode is j6l4...

its also a L01J080G kit number. Theres a sticker that says "Feed Your Need for Speed with ATA/133" which someone said meant it was a fluid bearing. So is it or is it not a fluid dynamic bearing. anyone else have the same setup and get a fluid bearing drive?

it SEEMS like if L6L4 is printed on the sticker near the barcode, then the drive inside will be a liquid-bearing drive, and if J6L4 is printed on the sticker near the barcode, then the drive inside will be a ball-bearing drive.

just get the HD today, no ATA 133 card inside, but it is a fluid motor. I think the UPC code is 7 51921 02669 2.

really nice. last night when checking the Staples website, the Maxtor drive was listed, but it was showing as "out of stock". Now this morning when I check Staples website, that drive isn't even listed at all! whether i search by item number (471535), or just do a search on 'maxtor', the 80GB 7200RPM drive is no longer there.

DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRR STAPLES...

p.s. well, I got one drive yesterday at Staples B&M, and was planning to get a 2nd by ordering online, but maybe I'll just have to go back and get my 2nd at B&M too (with another printable cooopon of course )

I got in on the staples deal, and got a ball bearing drive, and also purchased a fluid bearing drive from newegg.

just my experience, these things are FAR from quiet. The liquid drive was actually louder than the ball bearing drive. You can hear the drives spin up and spin down like a damn scsi cheetah. And the piercing noise...

I have 5 7200 drives listed in order of quiet to loud:

(2) seagate barracuda 80gb
(1) ibm 60gxp 60gb
(1) maxtor ball bearing 80gb
(1) maxtor fluid bearing 80gb

the maxtor fluid bearing is the loudest drive to date ... very dissapointing. Ear piercing "Whiiiiiiiiiine"

i just ordered some 5400rpm maxtors, and will stripe them in my main system. I hope the raid will regain some speed ... but even if it can't my ears will thank me.

you need some black label Delta 80mms or a 60mm on your cpu to cover up that fluid noise

I ordered one of these early Sunday. Today I got a UPS package from Staples. No drive.
I got the CDRs I ordered and got the $30 coupon taken off of them (so it was $3.18 and I
will get a $20 rebate), but I am a little pissed that I didn't get the drive and was not
notified that they were not going to ship it. By now the B&Ms are sold out, but they
weren't when I placed the order. What is the latest that anyone ordered one online and
got it?

You have until JULY 15TH to send in the Maxtor rebate so maybe it will come soon or is it hopeless? I ordered yesterday and they say it's shipping so we'll see...

I called my local Staples (Columbia, MD) yesterday morning and they said they had only 5400 RPM drives - so I went ghetto (Catonsville, to be more precise) and checked out the store there last night. Two in the case. The first I saw was a regular ball bearing with the card, so I asked the clerk if I could see the other...he was simply mystified. The second had liquid bearings, yeah! Free ATA/133 card, too. Straight to eBay with you...

The card is based on Promise's PDC20269 ATA/133 chip. I wonder if there's an easy BIOS flash out there to turn it into a RAID board. Hmmm...

Definitely hot, thank you!

To anyone confused about which drive is which: look on the sticker with the serial numbers on the side of the box. You should see a six-digit set of letters and numbers written vertically (different than all the other printing on the sticker). Japan-made (ball bearing) drives say P6J6L4 and liquid bearing drives say P6L6L4.

Inside, the drive is labeled as a DiamondMax Plus, D740X (model #6l080L4).

Hope this helps...

Hell yeah! You're not a real man unless your computer sounds like a 747 on takeoff!

UPS just came a dropped off my drive.

P/N is MX6L080J4 (which implies japan which implies ball-bearings)

There was a J on the box as well - so anyone planning on returning the drive if it doesn't have the fluid mechanism: that's what to look for. It doesn't matter if there are L's in any of the codes, or where they are, it's whether or not there are J's..

This thread title needs to be changed as I just tried the deal and the best that I got + TAX was $80.

Drive $140
Philips 40x CD-Rs $33

Total $177 + (5% tax) = $186

Total - $40 Drive Rebate - $20 CD-R rebate - $30 off $150 coupon = $96 (but includes the CD-Rs which are $13 after rebate) so the total is

$83 at best for me

Either way, it's off by at least $10
