I was just about to buy the DigiTheatre DTS speakers from buypcdirect.com, but when I went to check out my basket was empty. I re-added the speakers and the price had dropped from $309 to $275. Adding the mounting brackets adds $20 to the price.

That's a super hot deal for those speakers!! Good find. What do you guys think about these speakers? The digitheatre or the digitheatre LC?

I think I will be sticking to my custom speakers. Cost the same, and they sound a lot better than these ever will.

And you'll be sticking to your custom DTS and Dolby Digital Decoder as well I imagine.

Reviews of this system are up at 3dsoundsurge.com . Shouldn't be that hard to find. Their comments are that the system is a good value for the $600-$700 list price. I happen to agree, though I picked them up for around $300 a few months ago. Just watched some of the LOTR Special Edition DVD last night in full 5.1 DTS glory. These speakers sound pretty good.

For those of you without a separate amp, the ability to have multiple inputs and a prologic/dolby digital/dts decoder makes this a pretty good buy.

The only knock against them, for those of you thinking of attaching them to a PC, is that they lack a rear input. I.E. you can either take a stereo input and apply a Hall/Sound field effect or Dolby Prologic...or you can take a digital coax or S/PDIF input and do Dolby Digital or DTS. So no 4 speaker 3d gaming sound...no 5.1 gaming sound...unless you happen to pick up an NForce motherboard which can encode a dolby digital signal to send out to the speakers. Also, if you want boomy bass you'll have to look elsewhere...though I believe they have a preamp out on the back to attach another sub if you want more than the system can put out.

Actually no, you could depending on what your sound card is and also if the games supports the 4.1, 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 settings.

oRdchaos-
How big of a room are you using them in for DVDs? I'm moving into a tiny little apartment in NYC soon (probably 10' x 10' livingroom)... think they'll suffice? Thanks.

More than suffice. Bought a set, friend bought 'em off me first time he heard them. Ordered another, and one for my parents (mine for my computer which doubles as my dvd player, and one for my parents for standalone dvd player). Excellent speakers.

If you are looking for true high quality home theater deals... most would be laughed off this board when people saw the costs. That is one of the unfortunate sides of Hot Deals is that people freak out when McDonald's hamburgers are $0.20 off but usually let some of the best deals get buried because they are more than a few hundered dollars... oh well.

Personally, I spent a little over a year assembling the mother of all home theaters (for my price range) which included a pair of $2K loudspeakers (to double for music), a pair of $600 surrounds, a $800 center channel and a receiver and cd player that retailed for $2K for the pair. However, having been indoctrinated by Hot Deals, there is no way I'd pay retail I ended up getting the speakers for $2K (retail $3.4K) and the components for about $1.5K through either purchasing demos, closeouts, used or just plain wheelin' and dealin' with sales clerks. If you are serious about wanting really sweet audio for a reasonable price...

Audiogon That is where high-end audio enthusiasts sell there used stuff. And believe me, if you pay that much for a setup, you baby the stuff! I got my center channel used on that site at half price without a scratch on it, not to mention the original box, manuals, warranty card and a copy of the guys original receipt!

Ebay is always an option but I usually much more comfortable buying through Audiogon. I would prefer buying used from another anal high-end audio buff like myself than from a shaddy dealer who probably sells on the weekend from the back of his truck

Last option is wheel and deal with you local shops. Be respective of the fact that they stay in business by having a physical store for you to visit and a staff to answer your questions so their overhead costs will be more than online stores. However, they usually expect you to negotiate with them. Tell them what you saw it for online but be understanding of their needs too. I got my receiver and CD player for $500 off and 20 ft of $5/ft speaker wire for free by doing this... oh it usually helps if you buy more than one item... you'll have more negotiating power.

Good luck. I'd like to hear other people's methods and sites they use!

As for why I'm looking at the Digitheater... I'm moving to NYC for 6 months and even though it kills me to leave my theater behind, it is just too big, too costly and too much of a PITA to move. That said, I'm not prepared to listen to just any crap for 6 months or worse yet... go without

My room isn't really ideal for DVDs, since the living room and dining room are attached, but the room is 12x25 total, the speakers flank the TV and are ~10' apart. So basically with a 12 ft depth in the room, I'm approximately at the distances this guy ran in this review

http://3dsoundsurge.com/reviews/DigiTheatreDTS/DigiTheatreDTS-p4.html

He says in DVD scenes he was reading 106db on a sound level meter. I still haven't gotten a chance to crank them all the way up, but playing concert DVDs they fill the room very well. If you like bass and have a separate powered sub, it may be worth your while to drag that along with you.

ClakClak:

Well, I ended up paying for 2 (like I said, a friend bought mine the first time we unpacked 'em and hooked 'em up when I got them, so I had to order a replacement set). Good speakers. I've had mine in a pretty good sized room, and it can do some permanent ear damage.
