Eventually replacing E8400.

Current setup:
Intel E8400, Core 2 Duo, 3ghz, 45nm, 65w
4GBDDR2 RAM
Gigabyte Mobo w/ P35 chipset.
Sucky ass budget ATI Radeon HD 3850.

What I do:
Lots of Lightroom and Photoshop work. I ran things fine when I was working with 8-10MP RAW images. However it seems like 18MP RAW images task LR to the point of necessitating an upgrade. Preview rendering takes forever now.
I also encode video so I can watch my favorite DVD's on smaller devices like EVO's, iphones, etc.

I figured dual core is the new single core. I am tempted to by a Core 2 Quad, but stock of these things are getting low.
I am going to go ahead and bump my memory, because DDR3 8GB setups seem cheap. And most likely the next thing I will buy will still use the same RAM. (I think)

So do you guys recommend a Core 2 Quad or a replacement with i-core 7 or 5?

thanks

I'd probably just go with a newer setup, such as an i5 2500k (or 2500, if you don't plan on overclocking). Especially if you plan on switching to DDR3.

I would just get a new SB i5 quad. The older C2 quads are actually still commanding a pretty hefty premium and I think your money would be better spent moving up to the new architecture. My OC'd i5-2500k wrecks my old OC'd i5-750 at encoding, which in turn made my Phenom 2 quad look a bit pathetic. When I encode my BR media to mkv's it is astounding how much faster the 2500k is compared to my E8400 @ 4Ghz.

You did not mention budget, but a decent 8GB DDR3, i5-2500k and Z68 mobo setup can be had for $350-ish

+1.

Soild advice, and the price is realistic: ~200 for i5 2500/K, ~50 for 8GB DDR3, ~100-200 for a Z68.

That sounds great. Thanks for a new buildsheet. Can't wait to start buying it and putting it together. 350-ish sounds perfect.

How much faster would a I5-2500K be over a C2D clocked at 4.2ghz, and assuming that the I5 was overclocked to the same speed. Any benchmarks for it ?
