yea maybe they wanted to search for those ads/copies of receipts you were trying to PM and send off to rebates.

retail store employees do not have the authority to do anything like that. If you wanted you could get that store in a heap of trouble. As is I'd probably copmlain to the corporate office or something and see if you can get something free out of it.

I ordered 2 items online, and went to BB to pick them up. As I was leaving the store, I handed the reciept to the kid at the door who then checked the bag for the items listed. Standard procedure, I assume. As he handed the reciept to me, he was looking in the other direction so, politely, I ask him "All set?". He turns around, and smiles and says, "Yeah, I just need to check your pockets." I thought he was kidding, of course. He then pats the pocket of my leather jacket nearest to him. I smile a "haha funny" smile and start walking out the door. He then reaches across my body to check the other pocket as I am walking.

A few feet outside the door, I'm thinking WTF just happened? Was he seriously checking for theft or just being inappropriately friendly/funny? Thank God I was distracted and in a rush. I don't normally take kindly to such behavior and thought about going right back in and raising some havoc. But, I had an appointment to get to.

I'm assuming this has never happened to anyone, right?

I smell a lawsuit!

yeah they were not supposed to do that. Even if you did steal something they do not have the right to even keep you in the store unless they saw you do it.

You should go see the store manager and check with him. As far as I am aware of they cannot do this and I would take it to the top.

the worst is at Sam's Club when they check your receipt. it's always old ladies who take forever to look through everything on your cart and check it against your receipt.

I am dealing with this now through my channels...

But seriously, people, is there something tangible to be gained? Forget gift cards or other trivial sums. As for a big lawsuit, sure we live in the land of frivolous lawsuits, but how much damage did this incident cause me? Enough to have me making some calls the next day, but beyond that...

why would that bother you? They don't want people shoplifting. If you're innocent, just go long with it and that's that. What, you're inconvenienced for a whole 4 seconds?

your rights need to be defended the moment they are infringed. lack of resistance and you'll find you have no rights left

I guess.... I suppose I'm just too mellow then. I wouldn't even think twice if they patted me down. It is completely understandable to me.

Agreed. Not saying I don't see the problem with being patted, but if it's the only time it's ever happened and I know I did nothing wrong, I don't really care. Just mellowin' out. Not about to start screaming "BAD TOUCH NOOOOOOOO!11111111111111icky" in a store after I've bought my goodies. It's not like it was a "frisk", he just patted pockets. A frisk is full-body.

No, to this I just say BB needs more female employees.

No, they are not. That constitutes a battery and is grounds for a civil action as well.

It's a wonder how some of you people walk around day to day without exploding.

Khaki pants, black polo, black leather jacket & boots. They wear khakis and polos. Have I become...one of them? Seriously, though, is it possible he thought I was an employee?

it seems highly likely now. for the holiday season, management ALWAYS hires a ton of temp/seasonal workers, and this year the uniform for temp/seasonals is the same kinda pants as everyone in the respective departments and the same color polo shirts. i honestly think you were just mistaken for an employee, because of your clothing.

Gender shouldn't affect liability.

I refer you to your sig regarding your statement above.
I said "shouldn't" not "doesn't." It's the difference between me being a rnoron and you being right.

See sig. again, since you obviously don't get the quote. Even if your right, it only proves what the quote says.

I have a friend that is "geek squad" and that is EXACTLY what he wears, so I guess it's a possibility...

They usually charge extra for that. It's a new service to go with their extended warranties.

"You want the extended warranty? How about a pat down?"

The Loss Prevention personnel at Best Buy are not allowed to restrain customers. They are there to try to PREVENT loss, they are not security. In any case,, he should not have patted you down. Best Buy can only detain you if they are accusing you of shoplifting, otherwise give them the finger.

he couldnt/wouldnt have patted you down if you hadnt asked him if you were "all set". The only thing he could have done was to call the cops unless he had firm proof.

I work in retail, and have had to deal with theft before. Usually we just call the cops and get someone to distract the person stealing. The cops like us so they usually arrive with a minute or two. The only exception was the time a group of kids came in. I saw one of them put a 1 farad capacitor down his pants. (dumbass) He had his back to me, but our ceilings are mirrored. I calmy called the cops, then went over to pretend I was going to help him. His friend did some weird shout thing as I was walking over, so he put the cap back. I asked him where the cap came from and he started flipping out. There were four of them and one them and one of me. The one who had the cap started circling around me like he wanted to fight. I wasnt going to take on four guys, so I went over to the phone, got on the intercom and said "I need everyone to car audio, NOW!" When the kids heard that and saw about 5 guys coming towards them they took off. The cops got there about a minute after they left. The cops looked for them (they ran off on foot) but never found them.
