Yep, I commuted to college for a couple of years, it was a 45 minute drive, and there was a couple of quarters that I had a 4-6 hour break in my classes, so instead of neffing, I went to the theater down the street and saw a show for $4 with student discount and had a theater to myself.

They probably didn't make enough money from that show to afford turning the lights back on after it.

Never and I think I'd be pretty depressed if I did.

Why?
Because it's just something you do with people. Sure you're there to see the movie, not to chat, but it's something you do with a friend or group for fun. Self-esteem issues as another posted suggested? Umm, no, I just think it's depressing driving there by myself, buying food by myself, watching it by myself, having no one to comment to about it afterwards, and then driving back home by myself. Not my idea of a fun night.

I have, and my wife sometimes doesn't want to go, so I go alone. IE Star Wars Episode 3.

I have never drank by myself, though I drink alone, since my wife doesn't drink 99% of the time, when I have a beer. Though I don't call having a beer or 2 on some nights actually drinking.

Don't think I have with movies but I often drink alone because I freakin love good sake and conversation with chefs.

I too thought it was weird to go to a movie by yourself - until my friends stopped wanting to go see movies that I wanted - or if they did want to see it, we couldn't schedule a time everyone wanted to go - tie this together with the convenience of a movie theater 100 yards from my house - and I have an enjoyable matinee every Saturday at noon (even if its by myself).

Yes. It was for a music class and we had to write a paper about the music in any movie shown in a theater. I think I saw the flick 2-3 times by myself.

Do you need your friends to go grocery shopping or mall shopping with you too?

My wife and I are not big moviegoers. That said, I have been to a couple of movies when work takes me out of town. It beats watching the same old crap on TV in the hotel.

Quite a few times, usually on Sunday nights (casual diner + movie).
Everyone else is too busy cramming / panicing about stuff due the next week (I get my work done on Friday nights - I'm weird like that )

No because shopping for personal items isn't a group activity. Pretty simply concepts here.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with seeing a movie by yourself at the theater, if you DON'T find it depressing then go at it! I'm just saying that's really no fun at all to me.

Most of the movies I've seen I've gone alone, and I've seen a bunch of movies. The only thing that sucks is if you get there early and get a good seat, then you want to get some popcorn or drink or whatever, you are afraid you're gonna lose that good seat. I usually try to take a coat and buy a drink before I go in, so that I can save my seat if I need to get up.

I get where you're coming from here, but I really think it's about the experiencing the movie. You seem to think it's about experiencing a group of people who happened to pick a theater as a place to hang out for a couple of hours. That's fine as long as you don't disturb the other people in the theater.

I just don't understand why sitting relatively silently and staring at a screen for a while isn't just as enjoyable alone as it is with other people who are (hopefully) doing the same thing.

Nope... I don't really like movies all that much, and the only reason I'll ever go is date, or as something to do with friends.

I have more than a few times. I moved halfway across the country, didn't know anybody and there were a few movies I wanted to watch. I definetly would prefer the company of other people, but I sure as heck am not so insecure in myself to feel embarassed about seeing a movie alone.

Some of you guys need to get a grip about depending on other people for something as simple as watching a movie.

LOL the same here. I have been going alone to the movies for a while. I have also felt uncomfortable and think people are watching me or something. Great thread, by the way.

me, too. One of my best friends was a manager at a local theater (Wallace Chain). So, he'd let me come in and watch movies whenever I wanted. Sometimes I'd watch a movie just to let him know that all the reel splice were okay, usually a day or two before the premier of said movie. After moving away from that town, every once in a while, if all my friends were busy, and I didn't feel like "dating" a movie, I would just hop in to the theater by myself. Went one day after thanksgiving by myself. all my friends went home for the holiday, so I watched 5 movies in a row. Much easier to do when by yourself.
