Despite the comical nature of the occurance, it does happen. One night I was working at pizza hut and we ran out of large pizzas. Some kind of snowstorm or something, everyone was ordering in. Boy did I catch flak from customers that night! Even though we were giving free upgrades to XL pizzas, people still complained like crazy.

People are douchebags.

One time a lady came in and ordered a medium pizza. We had run out of medium boxes (go figure), so I was putting them in large boxes and writing "ran out of medium boxes, sorry for the larger" box or somesuch on top so people wouldn't think they were getting a tiny pizza. She comes back 15 minutes later and shoves it on the counter at me and demands her money back. I explained the situation but she just started screaming at me in front of a bunch of customers. People were giving her really weird looks...she looked perfectly normal but just went off on me because the box was 2" larger than her pizza. Oye.

was she somehow trying to argue that because you were forced to use large boxes that you had to give her a large pizza?

Nope, oddly enough. She was just miffed that it didn't fit. I think she felt slighted by Pizza Hut. I think that if I had had a medium box and put it in there on the spot, she would have taken it. Go figure...

All the time. Many of the seasonal restaurants run out of ingredients. It makes for a dynamic dining experience, but I'd prefer it over having things preserved or having the restaurant produce a lot of food waste.

It also happens with some Italian restaurants that make their pasta fresh each day. For pastas that need to be filled ahead of time, they will sometimes run out if there's a sudden enthusiasm for a veal ravioli or something. Olive Garden isn't likely to run out, because they just run to the freezer and get some more.

Some of the best restaurants in the world have daily menus, so whatever ingredients are there that day is what you get. When they're out... they're out.

Went to a Chinese restaurant last night and they were out of brown rice. I also went to Taco Bell one time and they were out of beans.

At Alleghany Grill in western NY I ordered a bbq chicken sandwich. Instead of a regular large round bun, I got a hotdog bun sliced in half with one spread half on top and the other spread half on the bottom.

That's the only time I can remember.

*ah wait, I've had Burger King be out of onion rings -- I went with fries

A member on here and I went one night at like 2am to get some Dunkin Donuts. There was one by where we were living at the time that was open 24/7 for drive thru. We pulled up and the (very thick Indian accent) "Welcome to Dunkin Donuts, we have no donuts!"

We both just started laughing our asses off.

Guess you had to be there

Once in a great while we temporarily run out of something on our buffet. The single mindedness of some customers is hard to believe. I'll say "I'm sorry were out of * but, we'll have more out in a few minutes." So, do the customers try the other two entrees or, soups or, salad bar, sit down and enjoy their food till they see us bring out a pan of whatever ran out? No, they stand rooted to the spot complaining as if their entire meal has been ruined. I swear someday I'm gonna teach a "Lunch 101" class.

The McDonalds here is always out of either 1) McChicken, 2) milkshakes. Also, I went to a Boston Market here and they were out of chicken. And it was like 7pm too.

no f'in way! Unless there are two restaurants named "Allegany Grill", (I'm positive I spelled it with the correct spelling of Allegany for the place I go to), I never would have thought another ATOTer went there. They have absolutely the best food in the area.

Hmmm... the hot dog bun really doesn't sound like something they'd do. Almost, but not quite. I can't even remember something like that on the menu. I stick to lobster or surf & turf or something like that. (Their fish fry is awesome too) Prime rib is excellent. The only thing I didn't like were their stuffed portabella mushrooms. Sausage was one of the ingredients & it was too greasy. (Otherwise the flavor was excellent.) Their baked french onion soup is good, although I'm not 100% sure it's homemade like most of their other stuff. Every dessert there was excellent too.

I ordered one of those triple steak burrito things from Taco Bell once just to try it out. The Taco Bell frequently runs out of steak/chicken/whatever as 11pm approaches so I was expecting them to tell me they ran out of steak and for me to be on my way, but surprisingly my order was completed. I wasn't suspicious as there is always some lady who screams at the cashier if they dare fuck up and forget they ran out of X. I take a bite only to be massively disappointed that my triple steak burrito had nothing but chicken in it.

Bastards.

Although, it wasn't as bad as my friend who ordered cinnamon rolls and just got rolls instead.

Never thought I'd get the chance to tell this one

The McDonald's close to the university here always stops accepting credit card payments at midnight, and often times won't accept them until 1 and sometimes even 2 fucking AM. I don't know what kind of shitty POS system they use, but even when I worked at a hole in the wall take out restaurant, we only had to have the CC/debit system do an audit for added tips. They don't add any fucking tips to the CC tab at McDonald's, the authorizations on each individual transaction should be enough on their own.
Because of this, I was very used to the monotonous drive thru slave there and his "Hi, welcome to McDonald's, I'm sorry, our credit system is down, we can only take cash, may I take your order."
So I go with a friend to McDonald's at 1 AM, night before a big exam. We pull up to the drive thru, and he starts with the same boring shtick, and I start to mouth the words out at an attempt to mock him. I only manage to get "Hi, welcome to McDonald's, I'm sorry" right, because after that he added "we're out of beef, cheese, chicken, and lettuce."
When asked what we could get, he said 2 for $1 Apple Pies, and they only had two left. High tailed it the fuck outta there and went to Wendy's.

I just remembered. I went to an ice cream store. They had a sign up "Closed: out of ice cream"

Was at an Arby's yesterday and they were 'out' of baked patatoes. More like the staff was too damn lazy to make more. It was near closing time though. I even saw the staff turn away 2 customers cause it was too close to closing; guess I'd do the same if it was shiftwork at a dead end fast food restaurant.

They've been out of real roast beef for over a decade. What they serve up now is disgusting.

During the summer Wendy's, McDonalds, and Jack in the Box were all out of all carbonated beverages. I guess someone missed their delivery, but that didn't stop me from being hella annoyed.
