Ever had a Virus like this?

hey guys my step dad just emailed me he said he got a computer virus when he downloaded a program from K Lite. what should he do? is there a way of fixing this or his only option is to reinstall windows XP?

this is what he said....

" this fuckin thing is nuts man, it wont lemme open ANY .exe on my fuckin cpu, i did an ad-ware update and scan and it says everthings cool.

when i try to click on an .exe , either a black (DOS) window comes up for 1 sec. or i get a "(blank) error has occurred, send report, dont send report" message comes up PLEASE HELP MANG"

ad-aware does nothing against virii.....why doesnt eh install an anti virus program like norton antivirus or one of the 100000 others ? I NEVER download and run anything especially from Kazaa without checking it first with NAV

Have him do the online scan and clean at Symantec's website.

Tell him to scan his computer with Norton AntiVirus - Always do that before you post anything about your "virus."

1. Have your dad stop downloading stuff if he is stupid enough not to have AV software.
2. Have him go BUY Norton or run the free online AV stuff

Download AVG6, it's free and has worked fine for me. In fact, I've had better luck with it than any Norton product. Norton never cured a single virus for me, but AVG has been able to fix them all, and I'm active on Kazaa type proggies too.

that can happen when a malicious program installs itself as the default handler for exe's (commonly used trick)

you can try regedit... if you can get it running

i had a virus one time that changed all my .exe files to .zip files....

made it fun opening winzip.exe.zip

i formatted (was time to do so anyways)

if he can't open .exe's, he could have what i recently had, the Agrobot virus. that didn't allow any antivirus software to run. he will need to download the latest patches for this, he can do a search on symantecs website for agrobot, and they give step by step instructions. he will have to turn off his firewalls, then run either his AV software of his choice, if that doesn't work, he can run the web version of housecall from trendmicro.com. then, install the patches, delete ALL the infected files completely off the harddrive, and restart the computer. that should fix it.

Thanks Talon. You beat me to it. You don't have to pay for AVG, you only have to give them an email address to send your serial number to. And no, they don't sell your email addy or send you spam (at least, I've never gotten anything)

BTW, it's a matter of personal preference, but I always enable heuristics. It won't really eat any more resources, and it couldn't hurt. Also, if you've got a broadband connection and your computer is in an always-on scenario, I would also recommend nightly updates and full system scans for in the middle of the night - what else is your computer doing at that time anyway? It eliminates the need for manual scans on your own schedule.
