Well, sure, it happened all the time in my family. However, how I dealt with it is it only makes you stronger and more focused on succeeding in life (busting your butt all 168 hours in a week). Fast forward five years later and well, for some reason, you stop hearing those "smart" people because they are just average people in average jobs in corporate America. THEN, you see the friend of your parents START praising you for all your business success...MUHAHAHA!

UCI? wtf...I would have expected either stanford, caltech, usc, or ucla. sorry excuse for an asian.

She told my mom UCI was a great school and he got a a scholarship to go there. Now, my mom is telling me that if I don't at least get into UCI, I should just go to community college and transfer.

Scholarship or FAFSA money? I'm betting its mostly FAFSA money

Who knows... she'll never tell.

That is why we have to strive to move out ASAP. I was living in Santa Cruz for all of my college life + an extra year - then b/c the market bottomed out and there were no decent jobs left there, I had to move back home. It's been about half a year now and my debt is almost paid off so now it's time to look for some permanent work and get the #@$% out! Living at home SUCKS! :disgust:

You're not asian, are you. Our mothers always find some kind of way to praise their offspring, it's scary standing near them while they're talking. One second you're minding your own damn business and the nest you're stuck in this vortex of middle aged asian housewives worried about me . . ..

Good thing I teach kids, since teaching anything is looked up upon . . ..

Why such competitiveness among asian parents? Would it be mainly because they are foreigners from their native mother country where times were bad, and the things they couldn't do because of their times/situations, they want their kids to do it for them and fulfill their wish and make them proud?

I'm asian as well, and yes, I get the same earful every so often.

My dad sort of used to do that. There was a girl at my school who got a free ride at some private school (I got a free ride at a public school). He used to talk about how she did all of these great things, and whatever. Kind of pissed me off.

Until she became a drug addict, got pregnant, and dropped out of school. He doesn't mention her anymore...

Strange.

UC Irvine isn't that great of a school. No offense, but you should tell her to STFU. My senior friends who are like, getting a D in Pre-Calc got into Irvine.

Excuse me? UCI isn't that great of a school? What makes you say this? UCI has a very good Computer Science program- the guys who started the Apache web server project went there, the guy who started DNS (Paul Mockapetris) went there. They have the first school of Computer Science in the entire UC system, which is supposed to be a pretty big deal. Most other schools only have a department of Computer Science under the School of Engineering.

I admit that UCI isn't as "prestegious" as Berkeley or Stanford, but it's one of the better schools here in California. I think I get what you're thinking though- you're wondering why the mom is bragging about her son getting a full ride there right? If that's it, then I agree with you. Most Asian moms brag about their kids getting a full scholarship to some Ivy League school. Not a "cheapy" state school like UCI.

A full ride to a school isn't bad though... that's at least $60k that they'd be saving, either in student loans, or out of their parents' pocket. If it were a private school, that would be over $100k. Talk about saving money, eh?

Personally, I say UCI sucks too, but maybe its because I grew up in the area and its considered the "local school" everyone goes to. That, or the local community.

I just realized this is the kid's mom that is bragging to you about her kid? I would mess with her and say "yeah, but did you know he likes it in the ass"... and then she'll be shocked, and you can just nod your head matter-of-factly and say "yep, yep... word at school is he's gay"

yah, my mom and I were just talking about this. Every time she sees this one friend of hers, she never fails to mention her daughter went back to get back to get her Master's degree. Its like this lady has no life and is living vicariously through her child. So sad. I hope I never become like this. I plan to encourage my child, if I ever have one to do whatever he/she wants career wise within reason, and let their lives be autonomous of mine. I dunno, maybe its easier said than done, we'll see if/when I get to that stage in my life.

My son rocks. He was just accepted to Oxford Academy. He's a GATE student getting killer grades!

Ummm...

What were we saying?

Seriously, the above is true. But I don't blab about it... Especially to other parents. They always try to compare their kids to mine. Big friggin deal. Every kid is different and will excel at different things. While my son is a lot like me, high IQ, soaks up knowledge like a sponge, he's also like me in having sh!tty social skills.

So I just don't compare kids, because there IS NO COMPARISON POSSIBLE!!! People are people, and everyone is unique and special.

No - my parents bragged up other kids to make us more motivated. And did it work? Of course frigging not. But if I was hanging around with somebody who didn't STFU about their kid I'd cease and desist.
