When I was in high-school I was obsessed with robotics, especially for the purpose of surveillance for some reason. I created a system of ground surveillance using units I called GSUs (ground surveillance unit; clever, eh?). I had a blimp that was to be mounted with a receiver that would take the position of GSU coordinates. To be cute, I called the whole system ASS for Artificial Satellite System.
I got as far as having the blimp and the GSUs, but never got a comprehensive positioning system working. I wrote the software in C at the time.
Anyway, about 3 years later I was reading in Popular Mechanics that NASA had created an almost identical system.
