Several times when playing different games in a dark room with headphones on, someone came into the room behind me and yelled my name,or grabbed my shoulder.Totally not expecting it it made me jump and scream lol.
Really made Doom3,Stalker,and Bioshock memorable.

There are quite a few.

But i still remember when you first enter delta labs in doom3. The suspense.. the shadows.. ok i was freaked out because nothing jumped out (well it did) and you could hear them around you.

Fear and condemed were both freaky as hell. The climbing of the ladder scene and up in the duct work in fear with that damn little girl had me going "s**t".

BioShock was good for a few thrills. And they did it without using darkness. Bravo.

I've had plenty of them in Doom 3. Great atmosphere in that game.

A few in BioShock too, but I've just started playing it. Also a game with great atmosphere.

No mention of Undying?

To me, that is the scariest game I've ever played.

In Doom 3 about halfway through there is an area where you are constantly expecting to get attacked but for the first four or five minutes there is nothing, then an imp crawls over the glass on top of a room and you can see its shadow. I was tense the whole time it was worse than when I was being forced to run from monster closets at every corner. I wonder why the whole game didn't have that atmosphere.

Also the hell levels were pretty sick.

Yeah, System Shock 2 pretty much wrecked me from playing any suspense/horror game ever again. What was that, like 9-10 years ago? Still haven't finished SS2 (I reinstall and try it every 2-3 years) and I can't handle any of those types of games now.

I'm a pansy.

July '99 ... it seems like 10 years

rumors of SS3
-since BioShock was *not* its "spiritual successor"

it'll be another game you cannot play

EA
-it'll probably be MMO

P.S. For 'pansies' that *want* to finish SS2-type games ... turn the speaker volume [way] down.

System Shock 2, man...what a game! Likely, a lot of you don't remember this one, but it scared the living sh#t out me on several occasions.

F.E.A.R. was good also, but not quite as scary as SS2.

Doom 3 by far had the greatest number of those moments. I really could only take it in short bursts. Bioshock had it's fair share too. Bioshock's were a different type of disturbing, mainly due to how insane the splicers were. FEAR

Games that are definately scary, but not so many startle moments:

Resident Evil series, Halflife (especially the beginning before the experiment started. You just knew something bad was going to happen).

Wow, I was just going to mention that one (Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - that damn haunted hotel :frown:!).

- Various F.E.A.R.-esque moments where the murdered little girl's ghost started showing up randomly
- Walking up the stairs and getting suddenly dropped through the floorboards into the basement
- The falling elevator in the shaft
- The house (esp. the kitchen) coming to life and flinging cleavers, pots, and pans at you
- Various vases coming to life and exploding in your face
- The disturbing newspaper clippings/diary entries (esp. the decapitated head in the washing machine one)

Did I miss anything?

-Apparitions of the husband and wife
-Subdued voices
-Entering a hotel room with children's toys, watching the toy train roll out of the room, then entering the room again moments later to find the toys smashed and messages written in blood on the wall.

That gives me chills just reading it. :Q

i was in one room where it like fogs up real quick or something and you can't see. i was after a safe or something and i turn around and to leave and there's a splicer just standing right behind me. scared the shit out of me!

Yeah, that part scared me too. And in Stalker, the sewers and the bloodsucker village were also scary, I was reluctant to even go there my first time playing.

One got me good on HL1. At the early start where the room is filled with water and you have to turn the switch off to stop the electricity. Then you proceed in the same room to go to the vent. Well there was a headcrab in it and it jumped out of dark at me and scared the shit out of me.

the one more recent was in the original fear in the office complex. Where your walking gingerly down the hallway and all of a sudden 2 dead bodies pop from the side through the window. Got me good.

Thief 3: Shalebridge Cradle - stopped playing the game because I just couldn't get through it.
The first time I played the FEAR demo and Alma appears when you get on the ladder.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth - All of it.

The redeads in Zelda OoT. Despite being horribly polygonal, something about them + their sounds was creepy as hell.

Also, something in the Resident Evil original remake on GC. I was going by a door on the 2nd floor I must've walked past a dozen times, gone inside, etc. But this time, a zombie busted through it and grabbed me. That got me! Totally unexpected. Usually in new areas in those games I'm on alert and going slow, in cleared areas I just run through fast and don't expect anything. That never even happened on the first playthrough.

I love the game but finished it before the patch came out. So I am redoing it with the walk enabled. This is one awesome game

I remember opening a door in Doom 2, and a Hell Knight was directly on the other side and I was stuck in a narrow corridor. I let out a "Oh Sh*t!" then.

In FEAR perseus mandate, when you cross the metal catwalk and see a creepy guy go into an alley. When you go in you see a dead guy and he isn't there but when you turn around he is right in your face. Wow!!!!!!!!!! Had to take a break. lol

Bioshock

I forgot what its called, but its the one where you fight your first spider splicer (made me laugh a bit to see that crazy woman flipping all over the walls). I open a door only to see a Big Daddy staring me in the face. Apparently I did something before to piss him off. Didn't even hear that whale sound thing they usually make, or the heavy foot steps.
