Ever hear a boom - an explosion in the distance and wonder what it was?

Just heard two. Sounded like sonic booms at about 5 nautical miles. Quite loud with a rolling sound.

I remember walking around at St Kitts a few years ago and there was a major line fault that pretty much knocked power out on the island. It sounded like heavy artillery fire - amplified! I swear dust on the road jumped. (so did I!)

heard a huge one once, me and a friend drove towards town to check it out, turned out it was a natural gas explosion in a house...destroyed the whole house and damaged all in the immediate area...

Teenagers have been known to break into vacant houses, snap off a gas pipe in the basement and place a lighted candle upstairs and leave.

I live near an industrial railroad station and sometimes hear incredibly loud booms, like a ton of steel being dropped on another. One time while riding my bike near the tracks, a slow rolling train made the sound and it was so loud it hurt. It just sounds like a slap of metal against metal.

So yes, and I'm wondering if anyone here happens to know what causes that sound.

I can't recall any incident. I do recall they were warning the city about a HUGE rock that could potentially fall in an open pit mine. They said if it did fall, the whole city would feel it and there would even be potential damage like an earth quake. I'm not sure what ever came of that. Think they managed to blast it piece by piece without it falling in.

Transformers tend to have a pretty distinct boom to them. I'm kind of use to explosions though, a Howizter goes off everyday at 5pm. It's just some kind of military tradition. The real fun is when they put an extra explosive round in, that will echo all around

That reminds me, when I went to Halifax I kept hearing a Cannon. I thought I was just hearing things, but I could have sworn I heard one. When I went on a tour they explained that every day at a certain time, they actually do fire a cannon! So I was not crazy afterall. :awe:

Yup, its during the 'ceremony' of sorts to bring down the flag. Music, flag down, boom, music again...free to go. Someone in the military will have to say what it's called though.

Yep, twice, two years ago, some jackass knocked over a power pole and it sounded like 500lb of C4 going off or something, each time. The power pole was just down the street from our house, so our power went out both times.

I hear explosions all the time...

Usually it's the army firing the M1A2, artillery fire, or they're messing with their MLRS. Also, I get to see the UH-60 Black Hawk, AH-64 Apache, and the CH-47 Chinook fly overhead daily.

I live nearby one of the army's firing ranges, and it gets quite loud when they get going, and it scares the living shit out of my dog.

I dont think the air force would allow officers flying multimillion dollar jets that cant follow orders correctly
