im pretty sure he had permission, unless his name was maverik doing a fly by.

I dont think the air force would allow officers flying multimillion dollar jets that cant follow orders correctly

Oddly enough, those officers are human.

They could have misjudged something or just weren't thinking clearly at the time. You know, it does happen. Breaking Mach1 is routine during flight, and I doubt there is continued communication with base as to the exact moment they can hit speed, it's typically a certain distance away, a targeted location, altitude, or combination iirc.

Could have had permission. But almost always the work to get approval to go supersonic in airspace over homes is insane, they just don't do it for a daily exercise. Even responding to any actual crisis they're going to chart a flight path to avoid those situations.

it was all over the local paper afterwords

he broke some windows doing it, because he wasnt that far up

I dont recall all the details since I was 8 at the time, but the base was closing, his duty was ending, and it was some sorta my last flight at this base in this plane in the USAF thing

def nothing was going on and I dont see them giving anyone persmission randomly to go supersonic <5000 feet over a populated area

Just heard two. Sounded like sonic booms at about 5 nautical miles. Quite loud with a rolling sound.

I remember walking around at St Kitts a few years ago and there was a major line fault that pretty much knocked power out on the island. It sounded like heavy artillery fire - amplified! I swear dust on the road jumped. (so did I!)

That's just me and another hit.

Tangiers during Ramadan they fire a cannon at dusk to let the faithful know they can sit down and eat the special super soup most prepare after having fasted all day.

My travelling buddy and I got to go through a trap door to the special back of this tavern in the surrounding hills and eat it with a group of locals. Then we all toked up and went back out to main room where, each evening, the old guys came down from the hills, collected, and started playing this trance like music that was all eneveloping.

It was pretty damn cool.

The main guy who got us this in was a would-be wheeler-dealer who was trying to construct a major dope deal with us. No fucking way we were ever gonna' trust him with that or touch that prospect with a ten foot pole.

But through him we regularly got into the heart of real Tangiers, as opposed, you know, to tourist Tangiers.

Lasted for a couple of days.

Yes, in the military.

Also when I was a teenager. I heard a deep rolling BOOM! in the distance. Found out later that a man had been killed while using a cutting torch on some old underground fuel tanks. They had been removed and were being disassembled. He forgot to make them safe before cutting on them. The end cap blew off and killed him instantly and that was the boom I heard.

Air force station not too far away gotten kind of used to it. In fact there isn't much that gets my attention noise wise. Planes flying over, two freight trains twice a day about 1500ft away, siren for fire department about a block away.

I grew up on USAF bases during the 50's and early 60's when there were no regulations against sonic booms...those pilots used to rock and roll the base and surrounding towns pretty badly. High-speed, low-altitude flyby's can create quite a boom.

Having survived Vietnam...some types of booms catch my attention..."INCOMING!!"
While others are just background noise.

I remember hearing a big boom when I was maybe 10 or 12 years old...shook the whole house. Teenage kid working at a body shop a couple blocks away wanted to prove he knew how to use the cutting torch. Well he did but he chose a 55 gallon drum full of paint fumes. They peeled what was left of him off the walls and ceiling.

gunshots were fairly common in my neighborhood as a kid, so I probably wouldn't even care
