I actually turned down an invitation to join. I considered it for a few days but ultimately decided that the purpose of this organization (or any other honor society) was to, in exchange for a chunk of money, shove a certificate up your butt and tell you "Congratulations. You did good." Your advisor might tell you that such membership looks good on a resume. But in my experience, employers don't pay attention to such things. If you want to pad your resume, pad it with publications and/or patent filings.
I've never heard of anyone turning it down. It is the most prestigious honorary society (and the oldest) in America. You don't pay into it. Are you sure you weren't nominated for "Hafta Tappa Kega"?
Mark Twain was a member, so is Michael Crichton. And btw, it looks excellently on your resume.

Joined? It's not a club or a traditional fraternity. People are invited for membership at the end of their senior year based on grades and the breadth of classes taken. In my case I think the fact that I was a pre-med business major helped.Originally posted by: stormbv
It's the honor society for liberal arts and science undergrads.
I could have joined it, but at that point I was only leaving my room for classes...sometimes. I wish I had...

Yes. I was nominated but didn't get it. However, my classmate did. She's a dirty, rotten little minx!

I have heard of it.
I am a freakin' member!
1. You are extended an invitation to join.
2. It does not cost a thing.
3. They do try to get you to purchase the key for 70 bucks.
4. They have secrets like the freemasons!
