I'm wondering how retardedly expensive it would be to have someone take care of all of my packing and moving for me.

I've got to hire movers no matter what because I have large/heavy furniture and all my friends are chicks, but packing everything up just seems so exhausting

What kind of packing service? *rimshot*

In all seriousness, it's going to be really expensive. Just do a little bit at a time and you'll get it done eventually. I've moved 6 times in the last 8 years, I feel your pain.

Do it yourself and inventory all the boxes. I would not trust people I don't know packing stuff around the house, too easy for them to steal something without you noticing.

It will be at least as much as the cost to move. The movers can give you an estimate on packing as well as the move.

People put too much effort into packing. They feel a need to super-organize all their boxes. Just stuff things into boxes until they're full, taking care to protect anything breakable. Organize it when you unpack it as you put it away.

I completely agree.

Hiring someone to pack for you seems like a waste of money, not to mention I wouldn't want a stranger going through all of my stuff.

I was a mover during summers. We didn't care about your stuff. We just packed it up.

The 4 things movers hate to see in no particular order:
1) Pool table slabs
2) Piano
3) Sofa-bed
4) Solid cherry triple chest of drawers (these are nightmarish), we would normally tell people to just leave their clothes in the drawers, but not with these monsters.

Make it easy on yourself. Sell/toss all your bullshit.
that's what I did the last time I moved and I've definitely got a lot that I'm going to junk this time around (kitchen furniture, dishwasher, bedframe, dresser, computer desk, and coffee/end tables are all getting junked) but I'm not going to be throwing out furniture that's only ~3 years old, brand new clothes, and all the books that I didn't throw out/give away last time around.

That doesn't sound like much to pack then.

well, it's a lot of clothes :\ but none of it is older than 6 months and I either wear them all regularly now or will in the fall/winter.

I'm giving thought to not packing up my clothes and books, though, and instead just throwing them loose in the back of my parents' suv.

Just get some huge laundry baskets and toss them all in there, anything you hang, just lay flat in the back of your vehicle.

See if the ladies will help you pack. Let the movers do the move.

I've lived here 23 years in part because I hate moving.

Given that I have had something nice go missing from every single one of my moves, I would probably agree.
Last move I did was from a small place where I could have kept an eye on each guy, but I was sick as a dog and couldnt pay attention. Things went missing. And other things were damaged when they arrived at the destination. I no longer trust movers. Next move I do I will keep it simple and then mail the rest when I am able. Ends up costing about the same and seems to be much more reliable.

Moving sucks, but it's best just to do it. It won't take that long once you get into the groove. I'd never pay someone to pack my stuff.

The hubs said he wanted to hire someone, and I said No effing way, we can do this ourselves. I'll hire people to move the crap, but we are able to pack it ourselves.
