looks like i'll be moving a ways across the country for a job.

my posessions are a queen sized futon bed wtih mattress, computer, average amount of clothes, about 12 shelves woth of books and random stuff and a car. i also have a coffee table, and a set of dishes if i want them.

how would you suggest doing the move... i dont want to drive it, or if i did drive it i would drive it with a friend and not have room for my things.

pack stuff in car trunk and back seat and ship the car? is there a high risk of theft? do this while flying.

get a moving company truck that can be shared with other people? cost estimates?

any recomendations are appreciated, especially names of good companies. i would much rather pay 25-50% more for safe secure good people.

edit/ it would be a move from oregon to ohio, about a 40 hour drive, and not something i would want to do.

how far exactly?

we moves an entire 4000 sqft house full of crap from maine to NY

Just call a moveing company and pay them to pack all you crap and drive it out there, the drive yourselfs in your car with anything of great value and meet the truck

usially takes liek a week or 2 for the truck depending on distance

I would say a U-haul trailer first if your stuff will fit. if not, moving company to take the big stuff and you drive the rest. if you have a moving company do it, get one to give you a "not to exceed" quote. they will come to your house and in 15 minutes figure out pretty close to what it will cost. I have had good luck with Mayflower.

you should really drive it, any other way will cost you a fortune.

Sell the futon. Pack eveerything else in the car and drive. Buy a new bed when you get there.

That's what I did. Took only what I could fit in my truck.

Sell furniture, pack car, start driving. If you need more room, ship your books and clothes by the cheapest insurable means.

that's a good idea. also go through your bookshelves and donate the stuff you will never read again to goodwill. dump your school books too if you have any, you'll never open one again

I think you are a little on the large side for your hour drive time but I could be wrong. Shipping a car is not cheap.

my company paid for movers to move me from san diego to seattle, they came and packed everything and trucked everything up to my new place in about a week in a big ass 18wheeler.

i moved from chicago to los angeles 2 years ago
pulled a u-haul behind my intrepid
car broke down in utah, computer went out and the fans weren't turning on -- ended up using speaker wire to wire the fans on the radiator direcly to the battery
it was 120 degrees, btw
the next day we had to have the heat on so the car wouldn't overheat
we got a flat tire in vegas, and my mini-spare was flat as well

we got there 1 day late
then 1 month later there was a family conflict with the relatives we were staying with, we ended up moving back
we were broke, and my car still sucked
my dad drove out there with his station wagon, we loaded both cars up with as much stuff as we could (left the rest in a parking lot )
we made the drive home with 2 cars

i'd recomend hiring someone if you have a lot of stuff
do the math though, if you don't have a lot of valuables it will be cheaper to sell your stuff and buy new when you get there

Yes. One car from NJ to MN was approximately $1000.

i've shipped with dependable auto shippers (DAS) from san diego to philly then back...it cost a little under $1000 each way, took about 3 days each time. (they come pick it up and drop it off wherever) i'd definitely recommend them. they don't let you put that much in your car though...just whatever fits in the trunk as long as it's not really heavy

Exactly. WHen I moved from IL to MD 2 years ago, I shipped everything I needed - in boxes; and disposed off / sold / donated the rest.

best piece of advice.... don't pay to have crap shipped halfway across the country. assess carefully what is worth shipping and what can be just dumped... you'd be surprised

Man, my dad drove just himself, a 30 foot box truck from budget. All the way from detroit to tucson. He only slept one night from around 11 pm to 6 am. Thats it no more sleep, just starbucks double shots and vivarin.
That was nearly a whole 4000 sq ft house on that truck, the rest came out begore with him me and my mom pulling the biggest uhual trailer they have with a yukon.

FUn fun fun.

Drive it and enjoy the country. I've done it twice.

If it don't fit in the car, don't take it.

If you do it yourself, do not get a uhaul truck. I've simply dealt with them too much to be convinced of the fact that their vehicles are worth taking on a long trip. Go with Penske or something.

You can always get a car carrier trailer too and haul your car that way....it's REAL easy to do if you're car is FWD. Many truck rental places rent these as well.
