Ever shock yourself by touching the RJ-45 end of an ethernet cable with the other end plugged into the hub?

Nope but I have shocked my mouth by having my hands full while cabling and holding a cable with my lips.

The only way that can happen is you have bad cabling and don't have the patch panel grounded. You DO have the patch panel grounded don't you?

Static electricity. Which cannot happen if the cabling is installed correctly, which it most never is.

I ask because I've worked with loads of cat5/cat6 and never even felt the slightest tingle.

No, you can shock almost anything with static, particularly if it is metal.

Umm, no? That's the reason for grounding low voltage cabling.

Lol - no. But I have accidentally touched a live 120VAC circuit - that was[n't] fun. And I've old-school tested a 9-volt battery [touch the tips to your tongue - the more it tingles, the more fun it is!]

The ring voltage is 40v+, right? :Q

I'm showing my age here. To tone out a line the best way to go down a huge wall field of 66 blocks was to lick your finger, put the wand in your your first knuckle and run down a wall of junctions to find the tone. You got zapped by ring voltage every now and then but you found the tone. But it was enough to smart and curse. BZZZT, marther-focker!

-edit-
After reading my post I feel really old. And I'm not even 40.

No, but I have been working on phone lines before when a call came in - zapped the shit out of me - I didn't know WTF was going on for like ten seconds or so - kinda freaky.

Ring voltage is high enough to fire an NE-2H neon lamp. I'd say it's over 90V PTP.

As for shocking yourself with it, no it's not something you want to experience. A buddy of mine was telling me a story when he was digging to put wire out to a shed he pulled something that appeared to be a tree root which turned out to be his underground phone wiring! In repairing the wires he stripped it with his teeth (!) and said someone called when the wire was in his mouth.

I did something similar with a PA speaker line (70V) and you only do it once I'll tell you that. :Q

I'm 27 and still have done that.

One time I was toning out a line on a 66 block and hit a pair of clips that was hot and it destroyed the end of the wand. Scared the crap out of me.

I was running a signal cable for a GPS based time server when the end of the cable I was feeding hit an exposed battery terminal on a 8 battery bank used for back up power. BANG!! FLASH!!

Had to check my pants afterwards. Just my luck every other set had plastic caps over them and I some how found the missing one. Pretty much melted\welded the twist on connector.
