I didn't notice where you peeled the WiFi/Bluetooth antenna off the old digitizer.

That's impressive he's able to fix those while working on a tug boat

http://youtu.be/sXzvHED0JT0?t=9m6s

Ha, and yea, what the heck was that?

Obviously his phone vibrating.

Scratches aren't an issue at all.

The old ones go in a box. I'll find a use for them at some point....maybe.

Maybe a machine shop could make a straightening jig for you and you could hammer out the bends.

Btw, ever considered an electric screwdriver that has an adjustable torque?
No way. On some screws, MANY inside iPhones, you're lucky to even have a good enough angle and you absolutely have to be able to feel if it is slipping or threading incorrectly. The smallest/thinnest screwdrivers still get in the way and make it hard to get a good angle. With only a couple turns needed, all they do is make a frustrating mess of things even where the screws are wide-open.

thats why i never buy used stuff from those sites. some of those after market parts are not real gorilla or whatever glass your tablet/phone manufactures uses.. cheap plastic replacement parts, breaks easier

...but cheap to fix.

I don't think he replaced the digitizer. Just put the original one into the new casing.
Oh, he definitely replaced the digitizer. It's glued to the replacement glass. He even cut the original cable. There's no reason for glass without a digitizer to have a cable.

The glass on the front is all one panel but he lifted only the glass that was attached to the digitizer and left the rest glued down. The WiFi/Bluetooth antenna are flat cables that are stuck to the inside of the glass. They are not technically stuck to the digitizer, but they are sold as one unit so we call the assembly "glass digitizer."

The original one was covered in packing tape and God knows what else. I used a brand new digi.

I don't normally remove the wifi antenna. The cases I buy have them already. However on this one, the connector was broke so I had to replace it. I keep a stack of them since its a common problem.

Awfully small screws. Very easy to over torque them plus it would be difficult to get a "feel" that they are started square and not cross threading. I'm sure somebody makes the right tool for the job but the cost may be prohibitive.

I have bits that would fit no problem. Stripping the screws isn't my concern, its having the screwdriver jump and damage the LCD. That's why I use good screwdrivers (Wiha FTW!). Just as fast as a driver and I have a ton more control.

Oh OK. You know I forgot when I replied to you, but I remember seeing him cut that cable now and I thought at the time "did he just cut that cable?" For some reason I thought he was going to reuse the digitzier when I first watched the video. I just reread the thread though and can't figure out why I thought that.

Ignore me then. Carry on. lol

Is this an old video? What an Ipad 1 worth these days? 50 bucks?

Glad I watched, I now know never to buy one refurbed.

I bought my wife's iPhone 5 from a 3rd party refurbisher like that. I won't buy iPhones used on Kijiji. Too risky. At least with a 3rd party refurbisher there are new or like-new parts as necessary (like new housing) and store warranty. Any problems and you have a physical store to go back to.

The iPhone I got was black, which looked new. However, I wanted silver and he didn't have one in stock, so he just went to the back and put on a new silver shell.

The premium over Kijiji is maybe $50-75, but with a warranty and looking mint.

I've done more than a few iPad 2 digitizer replacements, but today a coworker brought me an iPad 2 in good condition but with no image (backlight comes on; screen stays blank).

I haven't made it home yet (just started a 13hr shift) but I thought I'd ask: In your experience, what usually causes this? I saw a YouTube video where it was a component around the display connector that came off but I don't think the digitizer has ever been swapped on this one.

 Great stuff

I tried to replace the headphone jack on my old iTouch and ended up destroying it.

I fixed by iPhone 3G, but it took me something like 1.5 hours.

I fixed my iBook, but it took me well over an hour.

BTW, when I swapped out my MacBook Pro fan for a new one (which was comparatively pretty easy), I couldn't get the last screw for the fan out, so I couldn't remove the fan. The screw was stripped and stuck. I ended up taking a drill to it, which worked, but scared me for obvious reasons. Any better ideas than a drill?

Normally just needs a hard reboot. Otherwise if you can get it into recovery mode, might need iOS reinstalled.

If you try that and it doesn't work, its a guessing game. I'd check to make sure the LCD connector is all the way in on both sides, take it out, clean it real good with alcohol, then try another hard reboot.

If the LCD comes on but its dim, try the same things. If that doesn't work, its a tiny as hell filter. I can do them but its a huge pain and I don't have it down yet.

One size bigger screwdriver and put your ass into it. I run into that a lot on credit card terminals and 1/2 the time I end up taking a dremel to the screw. Would it really kill them to use a decent quality screw?

I just bought a Speed Out to try, no idea if it will work.

Yep, it is a well known fact that iPads that are completely trashed like that only have exterior cosmetic damage and once the case and screen are replaced they are indistinguishable from new.

There are many good ways to make money without having a job and this is one of them if you scale it to the max.

I know a lot of people who repair broken items for a living, doing this with things like heavy equipment and trailers will be a lot more profitable though.

Also, try a set of JIS precision screwdrivers (Japanese Industrial Standard).

Carson is mad because he thought he could just go to a website, buy 50 iPads, throw new screens on them and make a ton of money. I had to break it to him that its not that easy.

Nah. I pick up empty soda cans I find and recycle them. Good money for enterprising folks with no real job skills.

The OP is the modern day junk dealer. When I was a kid we had Freddie Latanzio, who went around in his old beat up pickup truck picking up anyone's old appliances, building materials, junk cars, took 'em back to his lot, scrapped them out, resold this and that.

Somebody has to do it.
